I'd like to suggest that when we come across spam posts, that we quote them into a new message here like this one that just showed up.

If we do this (instead of posting a reply to the original post)
- we have one central place where we can all report new spam (easier for the moderators to watch)
- we avoid bumping that post up to the top of the "unread messages queue"
- we deny the spammers the satisfaction of getting notifications when someone posts a reply in their new threads
It's easy to do - Just hit the little quote button above an offending messsage, then select the text and copy it to your clipboard. Do not post a reply in the original thread. Instead, come here and post the copied text into a new message. You don't have to post any commentary (unless you really feel you need to say something about it). Most spam is self-explanatory.

By the way, what is meant by the "notify"selection of the options attached to each post? I thought it might be a way of "reporting" spam or whatever, so I clicked on it and got a window that has a meaning I don't understand so I cancelled it. Excuse my ignorance, but what does "notify" mean?

Hi Kurt,
Edit - Notify turns on email notifications so that you get an email if someone replies to a discussion in which you have posted. I think this is turned on by default.
This is not a mechanism used to report offending posts.

This option has been considered for a while now. The con to this option is many newbies want their question answered or to get involved right away, and once they do they learn that this is a pretty swell place and they stick around and contribute/get involved. By having a delay we run the risk of losing these.
Once the problem of the spammer gets greater than the sum of this con will be the day something like the suggested is implemented :mad:

There is nothing obvious about the names. Sometimes they look legit and they have a lengthy spamming history, other times when the name looks like a spammer with a randomly generated name, they prove to be honest, hard-working Larrivee lovers.
And they do pass a modicum of screening; the graphic image interpretation.

2 of the 3 Members you initially listed had previously been dismissed near the time they posted, The 1st one the jury is out and we are monitoring closely. Of late ( like the one you saw from this morning) I usually delete the post but decided to leave on temporarily to review the craftiness with the other mods. ( The post is left temporarily BUT the Poster was dismissed) The same person as olivefox8788 who was also dismissed at the same time.
Thanks again for your assistance on this as it certainly takes a community effort to combat.

I didn't originally noticed the "oldness" of the other two spam posts - I just clicked on the recent post link from the main page and then started reading backwards without paying attention to the dates. Are bots getting sophisticated or are these humans? I used to run a board - I know the headaches - I eventually turned off links and images in signatures.
These ( you indicted) would be humans, but the Bots are getting more and more sophisticated and is a challenge trying to stay ahead

I think it's harmless to quote the spam here. We all know that this is the spam reporting thread.
It also makes it easier to spot if someone has already reported something.
It also makes it clearer why someone is reporting a particular post.

In the Other Guitar Section that Zager thread seems to initiate some kind of bug. After clicking on it yesterday the forum would not respond for me any more. Plus there is no post in the thread.
There was a post in the 'for sale' section today for gummies that is obviously spam. Since we seem to have no way to notify admins to delete this stuff, I'm in the habit with these things to just 'ignore' the poster. Works just fine.
