Shipping a Larrivee from US to Canada

Trying to verify this; there is no duty if I sell and ship a Canadian product from the US to a Canadian buyer?

Correct there is NO duty because of NAFTA

There is however sales tax to the buyer.

Depending on the province the buyer resides the sales tax could range from 5% to 15%

Do you mean that you pay a sales tax for something not bought in Canada?  That sounds like a duty to me.
That's one of the big advantages of internet sales.  IOW, I can buy a guitar from a seller in, say, Georgia, and not pay the Georgia sales tax, OR the California sales tax.

When you file your state income tax return you are supposed to report any purchases made in other states via the internet. The state collects the sales tax at that time.

Call it what you like. a very good point you make - the authorities here call it Sales Tax. If the product is not made in a Country where Canada does not have a Free Trade Agreement then we pay " the tax" referenced above plus a duty 

Larrivee Guitars travel Duty Free in North America it just that if you are Canadian be prepared to pay the tax that you would pay at the corner store regardless if it is used or not. A bit of a caveat if the item is less than $200 it usually travels tax free. But what can you buy for $200 today? A clear pick-guard I suppose

This topic came up during the sale of my Larrivee OM in the last couple days.  Because of previous shipping hassles with a US to Canada package containing motorcycle parts,  I limited the sale of my Larrivee to those in the US.  In no way was I snubbing Canadians and I apologize if anyone felt slighted or excluded but I simply didn't want to go thru the troubles I experienced earlier.
Others chimed in and  said they had no issues with shipping over the border so maybe it's as simple as I don't know how and there's an easy way to do it without any problems from customs.  In case the opportunity comes up again,  I'd love to know how it's done.  Is it the documentation on the package?  Description of contents?  Declaration of value? ????????

Hi, I come from the discussion on the other forum.

Ok, ALWAYS declare value, for insurance purpose BUT;
when a US guitar is coming to Canada, (doesn't matter WHO makes it) there WILL be a 13% tax added to the VALUE.

Now I have played this both ways, you can ask the seller to put a lower value on the instrument, meaning you pay lower taxes, BUT if there is any problem (never has been with me-many guitars) you will only receive the declared "value" not the "real value (loss or damage.
I leave that to you to decide how to proceed.

Now regarding shipping/brokerage fees etc.

In Canada we have a very good and efficient postal service, so I always ship that way.
Our Country in the past several years has been inundated with FedEx and UPS, botrh in my opinion are nasty money steelers.
I understand USPS is not a great thing you have (onl what I have been told by people who would rather not use that as a carrier).

Ok so FedEx and UPS charge huge and ridiculous up charges, brokerage fees ON TOP of the taxes they are required to collect.

Canada Post charges $5.00 brokerage fees, on everything.

You can see when shipping a nice guitar say $1,000-$2,000 how quickly the fees and extra charges add up.

I also understand that standing in line, filling out forms at USPS is an aggravating experience, where as the other Carriers aren't like that.
So I can see the issue, and believe me I have paid dearly (UPS once just left a guitar on my step, and it walked away).
FedEx once left a very valuable microphone outside in the pissing rain, and that was that, so I stay away from those carriers for that and afore mentioned reasons.

I don't have a problem paying taxes, I live in a Country where everybody has FREE health care, we have first rate schools, low crime rate, clean air, as well as our share of corrupt elected representatives.

I had a similar experience when shipping my Bakersfield through Fedex. I had called to have it held at the warehouse for pick-up but when I got home later that evening found it in the back yard, in the snow when it was -30 outside. Luckily the guitar was fine after letting it acclimatize the entire day.

I've had some better experiences before with both Fedex and UPS though. The best was when I had a guitar shipped from Edmonton to Winnipeg using Greyhound buslines. Received a call to pick it up at the bus depot the very next day.

About the taxes on goods shipped to Canada, that was my concern when I ordered my RS-4 ForumV. I expect to pay the Goods and Services tax but am hoping there will be no Provincial tax or Duty. Either way I'm looking forward to getting the ForumV.
