Just got myself an L-10 and it's wonderful! I'm curious, what are you guys using for strings?

I've tried about everything out there and always go back to John Pearse 80/20s. Lights 90% of the time, although right now I'm setup for mediums. I haven't heard anything that sounds better to me.

I use John Pearse Phosphor Bronze or D'Addario EJ-17's, both in medium gauge.

I play with the rounded edge of a thick pick most of the time, and find these two brands respond well to a wide range of pick attacks.

Each takes at least a day to knock the edge off the new strings, and they last for two weeks of hard playing. I think it's that "edge" that turns folks off of phosphor bronze.

I like the sound of 80/20's, but they don't have the bark/twang I like.

For fingerstyle playing, I'm less particular about my strings. I'm also much less proficient in fingerstyle, so that's probably why. In fact, I like old strings on my Larrivee parlor for some reason. I mostly play it fingerstyle.

DR Phosphor Bronze "RARES." I can't beat the tone. Rich and pianolike with enough bottom thunk that when I really lay into the string, it almost sounds like it wants to break out of control.

Definitely my favorite on that guitar.

That's the thing about strings also???? It's got it's place for every style/Acoustic model.I'm mainly using the Elixers Poly/Nano for i sweat 75% of the time.I tried the John Pearse/Dean Markley/D'Adarrios/GHS.

Peace!!!

Just had a set of John Pearse put on & I like them!

One more question:
My L says "Special Edition" on the nametag. What does
"Special Edition" mean?
Thanks,

I use DR Rares on my Lowden and liked them very much until recently. I bought a 10 pack and the low E is dead within a week. (with the last three sets) I haven't given up yet but I do have set of John Pearse and a set of Dean Marlkey's to try.

Thanks to everyone for your opinions.

I posted this elsewhere on the site, it probably belongs here.

Folk singer John Gorka has both 6 & 12 string L-10s. Here is a site with some video clips, the only song he is not playing a Larrivee on is "Paradise Once." It is a noncommercial site from a fellow fan:

Has anyone else tried these? My initial impressions are very positive. Certainly seem to be a cut above Elixurs and D'Addario Extended strings. They seem to have the true P/B quality of John Pearse strings and if they last as long as they should, they will be real winners.

Your mileage must have varied cuz there were quite a few posts on rmmga bashing Martin's coated strings as dull and lifeless. I'm not a big fan of the sound of brand new strings so I avoid changing until I *really* have to. So far the Nanoweb lights on my OM have held up for 3 months under daily playing and still have a clear warm tone that I wouldn't hesitate to take into the studio. Of course the disclaimer is that I *never* use a flatpick on that guitar and I don't have toxic finger syndrome.

I really like the Ernie Ball Earthwood Lights on my OMV-10K.

I have an OM-10 on the way right now.  I've always used Pearse Phosphor Bronze lights.  I may have to try something else.

So you know SE or special edition means that your modal 10 has micro dots in the finger board instead of the standard inlays. As for strings I'm a little strange--a set of Dean Markley 12's with the high changed to a 14 and the B to a n 18

After about a year of string try-outs, I've settled on John Pearse Phos. Bronze lights and DM Alchemy Gold Phos Custom Lights.  The Dean Markley's really last and althougth I love the Pearse sound, I give the overall edge to the Alchemys.  At least to my ears and on my guitar.
