ive seen several references to "greven" pickguards on here. i searched for some images and found some higher end guitars with, what i would have just called 'tortoise', being described as having a greven pickguard. is this some special material.....is it more $$....what gives?

Yes, it's a special material. It is supposed to be more like tortoiseshell and less like plastic. It's not the end-all be-all, but it definitely looks a lot classier in person than most of the plastic tort guards out there. FQMS carries them if you want to buy one. Depends on the size and type, but they're in the $20-ish range.

thanks....

but, no thanks.

To each his own... it's a small expense. Not like people who put $125 bridge pins in their guitars...  :P

Can you buy Greven pickguards and cut them up into $20 Tortis picks?  ;)
