I'm having a Dylan Day on the stereo in honor of the Minnesota Bard. Anyone else? Of course, I have enough recorded Dylan to have a Dylan Month or so. Happy Birthday Bob. Many happy returns!

I was not a Dylan fan early on. I became a fan once many other artists began doing covers.
An author on an internet blog does a yearly column or two on Dylan's birthday, as Dylan is a Minnesota native. The columns are wonderful, and the first column is always a repeat of last years..... updated a bit. The second column is always an almost endless list of Dylan covers by other artists.

Hard to believe he is 82.  Check out this "Back Pages" tribute from 1992.  If you have never seen this gathering of rock royalty on one stage, you don't know what you're missing.

Well, people have been covering Dylan from the beginning. He's one of the most covered artists ever. Eventually, however, you realize that, besides the odd cover by The Byrds, Hendrix or Joe Cocker, NO ONE actually does Dylan better than Dylan. Mostly they are just different. Yeah, I get it. Some folks think he's not a great singer. Must be why he's had such a terrible career and must have had to bribe Sony and Columbia into allowing him to make over 40 albums. I collect Dylan covers, by the way and have a shelf full of them. Yes, there are many good ones and the songs are good enough to survive almost anyone's take on them but, I'd argue that generally Bob's version is the best. It's also best not to listen to critics because mostly they have zero idea what they are talking about. It's like they don't actually listen to the album. Like calling Under the Red Sky or Down in the Groove bad albums. Ridiculous! And I don't mean that like how modern sports commentators now use it to mean amazingly good but as in ... ridiculous. Cheers.

That's the 30th Anniversary Concert. What Neil Young dubbed BobFest. It is very good. And yes very difficult to believe. I'm also finding my face hard to believe when I see a mirror. LOL

I only pay attention to people who respect and admire Dylan. Which is why I posted the links.
Did you catch the bluegrass version of "Don't think twice"? Almost as good as your version.

I'm not sure. By whom? The thing with some critics, they may respect Dylan and still be wrong about him. LOL

The nerve he has not making Blonde on Blonde over and over. I was listening to Down in the Groove which was panned for containing mostly covers, B-sides and outtakes and no great Dylan songs. Well, there is Silvio with Robert Hunter. I don't think they get that Dylan doesn't see himself as a bad singer. I think he just liked those songs and he sings his butt off on that album.

Thanks for the compliment. I do a decent version of that one, if I do say so myself. I like the blues version Clapton does on the album 247 mentions. What a terrific song! One of the best songs ever written by a 20 year old.

Infamous Stringdusters, about 3/4 of the way down the second link I posted.
Most of the other covers mentioned are worth the time.
The author of the column is a serious Dylan fan.

The Infamous Stringdusters are terrific. I saw them in Winnipeg at the folk festival. They did a workshop concert with Harry Manx. It was mind alteringly good. Unfortunately, my laptop crashed and this ancient iMac refuses to navigate to many sites and that is one. I'll try my phone. Yeah that's awesome. I have most of those covers. Tim O'Brien's Red on Blonde is a favorite. Have you heard Coulson, Dean, McGuiness, Flint? They do an entire album of Dylan covers that is one of the best. Mostly Basement Tape songs. Brian Ferry's Dylanesque is well worth it too.

I've got Bob (among friends) on my toolbox, though I don't think anyone in the shop knows who any of these guys are.
