Guitar for 8 yr. Old Girl

Hi All,

I'm trying to help a grandmother find a 3/4 size guitar for her granddaughter. She's 8 yrs. old. I had the first lesson with her, but the guitar she has is more of a toy than a guitar. I couldn't get it in tune, and even when I got close, it went out of tune very quickly. Grandma can't spend more than $100. I was thinking of the Yamaha JR1. If you have one in good condition you want to sell, please let me know. Little girl's dad is out of work so the finances are tight.

You might check out the Hohner line of acoustics. They have some child size guitars and the reviews have been favorable. Prices are in your range too.
Keep us informed. Always nice to see a kid fall in love with music. A proper size instrument helps them to feel in control and not fighting to hold on to the guitar, helps with the enjoyment level.

Boy, $100 is rather slim. I'd be surprised if you can get something for that number that wouldn't be a source of frustration. Granted, I don't know the starter market. Maybe you really can get a passable laminate for $100.

Have a friend with the same exact issue & thought immediate of a used Larrivee Parlor BUT even that is more than able to spend at this time. There must be a half decent ( good action that stays in Tune - doesn't need to sound like a JCL Anniversary at this point) childs guitar for a beginner out there? Would certainly like to know as have no experience with one BUT I too get  asked that question periodically

When I saw your thread title I assumed you were wanting to trade.  Having two daughters that were once 8, it would take some thought.  I wouldn't have considered it at that age, but for several years after they hit their teens... well, it would have depended on the guitar.

Grandmother ordered a Yamaha JR1 off ebay. We're both excited for the little one.
