id like to get more into this style of music. anyone know of some good dvd's or books to help?

ive finally got a good rig setup for a nice 50s/early 60s sound and id really like to learn some of this style of music.

I haven't really seen much for surf. Start with the most covered surf song of all time, Link Wray's Rumble, it is fairly easy it's D D E in the first position followed by a riff on the 2nd and 3rd frets should be easy to pick out. And don't forget a healthy dose of reverb.
Good to see someone interested in this genre gotta keep surf, rockabilly and blues alive!
The Dude abides.

The Ventures, "Walk, Don't Run" is A G F E.  Single coils with lots of reverb.

thanks.

ive been working on a pretty cool version of "sleepwalk" for a while. i dont use any slide, just some hardcore bending. it is starting to sound pretty cool, but theres that little bridge part in there thats still a bit tricky.

"sleepwalk" is, imo, one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.

Not strictly surf but there is lots of very good infromation at the Shadows site:  http://groups.msn.com/ShadowMusic  If you search the sound files you can find many wonderful renditions of Sleepwalk.  The site also has information on where to find tablature and how to program echoes.

I recorded a version of The Ventures' "Pipeline" which is a pretty cool song and dead simple to play!

Pipeline

It is played on my AmDlx Strat bridge pickup with lots of tremelo and reverb. The rhythm figure is played with a lot of palm muting.

Walk Don't Run has an interesting history. If you want to hear something close to the original tune you might listen to Chet's version. It was written by Johnny Smith who referred to it as "that Turkey that pays the mortgage" Johnny thanked Chet many times over for getting the Ventures to record a simplified rock version. It kept him afloat financially when he really needed it.

I think Homespun has some DVDs covering that style. Might even have some with Dick Dale

Hadn't noticed this thread until now. This is the kind of music I cut my guitar baby teeth on back in the mid-60s. Get some of the Ventures early albums, or their last couple for some great tunes to work on. This music is really a kick to play. The band I am playing with always uses Walk Don't Run or Pipeline to warm up with.

There are some nice compliations out there as well, particularly the old Rhino set, Cowabunga. Most of it should not be a problem to figure out by ear. Its  meant to be simple.

Dick Dale (Richard Monsour) is "The King of Surf Guitar".  He basically does tremolo picking and rapid glissandos (basically pick a note and slide down or up numerous frets)

Some songs to look for by him:  Misirlou (you should recognize this one) and Let's Go Tripin'

I would just do a google search for some tabs.  www.ultimate-guitar.com   is a good place to start.

Get the best of both worlds. Check out the Duo-Tones, who play acoustic surf music. They have a very nice acoustic surf CD:
