Nut Removal

I have a Larrivee LV-10 and would like to replace the nut.  This is the original nut from the factory.  Does anyone have any experience removing the nut without damaging the finish?  Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I take a razor blade and score around the finish rite up tight on the nut.Then using a flat head srew driver on the fingerboard side I tape with a small hamer.If this causes the willies bring it by your favorite tech. :POL>

Note that he 'taps' with the hammer, in case that isn't clear.  Usually one whack and it goes flying across the room.

i've never been able to get my parlors nut off.  it's evidently glued very firmly in place against the fret board side of the nut slot since theres a very small gap between the nut and the peghead faceplate.  i'll try using a wooden mallet and a little more force when i feel up to it.  my old OM-09 nut came out easily with just a light tap and it actually did fly out.

Really sticky ones can be removed by cutting them almost all the way through lengthwise across the slots and then using a pair of end nippers to pull the halves together closing the gap you made by sawing through with a fretting or razor saw. You need to be careful not to cut all the way down to the headstock when making the slot. Of course this destroys the original so you may want to make measurements before trashing it.

I would imagine that if your humidity level is on the high side it would make it more difficult as well. The wood on either side of the nut would be swelled and pushing against it.

As we get older, it becomes more difficult to get our nuts off....

Yes, point taken!  Much, much more coaxing is needed to achieve the same results.....
