Who makes the best wall hangers for guitars? Are they safe? How are they to be installed? Does anyone keep their guitars hanging at the time. What are the pro's and con's of this. Any help would be appreciated.

Should read: "Does anyone keep their guitars hanging ALL the time?" Sorry for the typo.

I keep mind hanging.   I use "String Swing" hangers.  I got them from a local music store.

FWIW, I've heard some comments about not hanging guitars off external walls - particularly in cold climates. Personally I'm not convinced this would make a huge amount of different, given the rubber insulating on the hangers and wall insulation... I may well be wrong though! (radiating cold.... temperature differntials .... or something?)

I use string swing and mine hang as well.  You'll need to put some neutral material over the rubber 'feet' that hold the headstock, because no matter what the manufacturer says it will over time harm the finish.  I use some 'socks' made from cotton cloth.

Hey pastor chuck, check out guitarideas.com I love the exotic wood ones he has. I personally have three "Tigerwood" hangers. The pics don't do them justice.

Those look nice and simple - but for an acoustic guitar, how far from the wall does the back of the guitar hang?

I made these for about 5 bucks each with stuff from Home Depot.  The hook has that nonslip textured rubber, and I've had no issues with it reacting to the finish of the guitars.  I didn't even put a finish on the wood blocks, but you can make them look as nice as you want to spend time.  The hook has threads, so I just drilled the hole a little smaller and screwed it in.   Even if you buy store bought ones, they are only as good as your wall anchors, so if you don't hit a stud,  use a good hollow wall anchor.  Learn from my mistakes..  :EM>

I think you'll find over time that it is a mistake not to cover that 'nonslip textures rubber' because it will react with the finish.

Very good advice. A bit of cotton covering is very cheap insurance.

I've been using String Swing for several years and all my guitars are always hanging (unless they're being played ^_^) and I am am extremely happy with them. I also have not noticed any reaction where the neck meets the hanger. I'm going to keep an eye on them now, however. How many years have other people had their guitars hanging?

This could be the start of a very interesting thread. :WNK>

I've seen a lot of guitars over the years, ones that passed through my hands and many at guitar shows.  Its surprising how many I have come across that have the tell-tale finish marks on the lower headstock 'ears' from hanging against a rubber surface,  Back in the mid 1990s I looked at an expensive custom ordered Martin that was only a few years old, a beautiful and expensive guitar that I would have bought except that it had those marks.  It is impossible to say how long it takes for them to show up.  But some little cotton 'socks' on your hanger keeps it from happening so why take the chance?

I had damage to my old 1974 L-09 happen in 2 days  in a "ultimate" brand guitar stand.

I bought several sets of the "guitar bras" which I now use.

Where did you pick the bras up?

This is what I use for a wall hanger, from Hercules. The rubber is supposed to be safe for finishes.
They use these at my local dealer and he says he's never had any finish problems. Cost about $20.

The Ultimate are advertised as being chemically safe. 1-2 days after I put my L-09 into the new stand, there was a softening of the finish and the rubber textured surface of the Ultimate was impressed into the finish of the guitar.

I have used the Hercules hanger for over two years now.  Great hanger and NO finish problems on any of my guitars.

Ultimate or Hercules gave you the problem Randy?

I posted in another thread recently about something I noticed at a guitar shop in the Atlanta area recently.  They had a GORGEOUS brand new Guild D-55 sunburst hanging on the wall there.  Whatever hook they were using (it looked pretty cheap) had literally eaten all the finish away at the points of contact near the nut.  The wood and fingerboard binding were completely exposed.

My motto about this is "You can't be too careful."

One important question for me that I haven't seen addressed on this thread is this:

How do you protect the back of the guitar body where it comes in contact with the wall itself?

When the guitar is actually hung (regardless of which brand of hanger you use) does the bottom of the guitar back actually touch the wall?

The room in which I want to hang my guitars has textured walls that are not all that smooth. If the guitars never touch the wall, then there is no problem, but if they hang and touch the wall, what do you guys recommend in that case?

Thanks for all the interesting and helpful info on this particular thread.
