Pray For My Dog Lucky

He didn't live up to his monicker this time...  Yesterday afternoon, while tending to my turkey in the smoker I heard my dog howling in pain.  I looked toward the sound and saw my dog with his head through the livestock fence with two rottweilers attached to him.  I tried to get them off (the Rotts) but ended up jumping the fence and choked them off my dog.  Lucky hightailed it back to the house, while I caught my wits and breath.  When I got to my dog and looked at the wounds, I found three or four puncture wounds two of which were pretty good size puncture/tears.  Now mind you this was Saturday afternoon and the only vets that are open at this time of the day are the ones that ask for your first born child as a downpayment for their services.  Well being a nurse I cleansed the wounds with betadine and packed them with an antibacterial wound salve for dogs (after cutting away the hair around the wound sites).  I also bought some antibacterial spray (which is one of the violet sprays (for you farmer/ranchers out there)  I remember my grandpa using this stuff along with a red spray on his horses for barbed wire skin tears.  The vet says that it probably could keep until Monday.  And I will re-evaluate him today and tomorrow morning to see what we need to do.  Lord knows we can't afford a vet bill right now.  Please pray for Lucky that he might have a speedy recovery and that he avoids any complications from these wounds.

Thanks, Mike

I will definitely lift Lucky Up in prayer!!!  DId you catch up with the owners of those Rotts?  They should be paying for your vet bills!!!!  Take pictures of Lucky's wounds and track them down to go to the vet with you. If their dogs were loose (on your property or not), the rott owners are responsible.  Someone should call animal control. Not to downplay the significance of Lucky, but that just as easily could have been a child.  Or might be a child the next time!!!

I'm sorry about your troubles. Life takes a lot of twists and turns doesn't it. I'll be thinking about you!

Yeah, MJ,
We just had a dear friend and cat, of 12yrs., get hit by a car. It was poignant and tragic, as he dragged himself back to "his" porch with a crushed leg.  When we left him at the vet's, they were going to see if he coulld be saved.  But the next morning they said this 3 leg operation would be $1500!!
Of course we couldnt do that and then had to put him down--to the tune of $650!!--for an overnight and then they put him down!!!  We were floored, emotionally and monetarily.
I am sending Lucky the best.
And do go find those owners.

The owners of the rotts are my neighbors and were very concerned for lucky's well being... (they offered to pay for a vet bill and paid for half of the fencing I put up to prevent further incident) I think he is doing better today, he even trotted up and down the fence (dogs seem to be pretty resiliant) even though he is in obvious pain.  I don't see any signs of infection yet and I have been keeping this anitibiotic paint spray on him at all times.  Giving him 325 mg of aspirin (he is a big dog) seems to be cutting the edge of the pain.  He is also eating (which is a good sign).  Given time I think he will heal... I just pray that infection doesn't set in...

Thank you for your concern and I hope that you continue to pray for his recovery...

Mike

Naboz I know how it is to have to put down a pet.  Had a cat that had leukemia that I had to put down, I was holding her when they gave her the shot (wasn't easy for even a tough bird like me).

Hi Mike,

I hope Lucky is going to recover quickly. Pets have a way or working themselves into our hearts and they become such a huge part of the family - at least our dog is! Blessing to you and yours!

Chuck

We'll add him to our prayers, as well! Our animals add so much to our lives (and families)! As I type this our 12 year old lab is snoring loudly in the background, the cat is looking out the front window, and the Scottie mix is watching television curled up with the children.

Is he a young dog? Thankfully, dogs don't seem to get infections as quickly as cats. Hope all goes well at the vet.

Blessings,
Deb

Lucky is a 40-45 lb lab mix.  Very smart and loving toward our family...   I have another dog (a small mix) and a siamese mix cat who is also very loving.  Pets do seem to creep into our lives and become a significant part don't they?  I feel so badly for my dog, especially when he is hurting and I can't do much for him... But he is doing better today and he isn't too old (he is about 4 years old...

Just wanted to give an update about Lucky, his wounds haven't gotten any worse, no infection seems evident.  He is moving around more normally now and is eating just fine.  I have been giving him an aspirin twice a day and I think I am going to cut that out this evening and see how he tolerates it.  His wounds seem less painful to him now and he just might be on the road to recovery.

Just hope that I will be too, it seems between working on my mower and then jumping the fence and wrestling the to rotts that I have pulled a muscle in my Latissimus Dorsi (lats) and they have been spasming since this weekend.   I guess I ain't no spring chicken anymore.

Thankyou all for your concerns and prayers for my dog.  I honestly believe that sincere prayer is a very powerful tool.

:)

Unclrob, you would be surprised how many dogs end up with heart conditions like chf and it doesn't take much to push them over the proverbial edge (any stressor can cause it).  I hope that all goes well for the remainder of your sitting duties.

Good news on Lucky! Sorry about your back though.

Thanks for the update. Lucky was fortunate you knew what to do for him! I'm sure it's what the vet would have done, and you got to him right away. Now take care of yourself, too! Prayers continue.
