Luthier David Iannone (Morgan Guitars, North Vancouver) is continually doing neat stuff with woods.  Have a look at his treatment of quilted maple and ebony on a build in progress.

Beauty!  I love that style and have been seeing more of it lately.  I saw a quilt like that on an electric.  Was a little lighter and they called it "siberian quilt".  I'd have bought it were it not a Chinese guitar.

Though I can appreciate the craftsmanship, I'm not a fan of the look of extremely "quilted" wood figure on any guitar.  It just looks too artificial to me; too much like bubbles or crinkled velvet and not like wood.  When it is dyed it has even less appeal to me, especially some of the purple or blue or green examples you see on some electrics.  Some of the PRS guitars come to mind.  I don't mind the figure so much if it's left natural like ST's picture, but still not something I would get for myself.

Yet, I find a "flamed" figure very appealing.  It looks more like real wood to me.  And I like "birdseye" as well.  Go figure.  (see what I did there)?
"Badges?  We don't need no stinkin' badges."

Became a Shooting Star when I got my 1st guitar.
Back in '66, I was 13 and that was my fix.
Still shooting for stardom after all this time.
If I never make it, I'll still be fine.
