I see that some pictures when posted can be clicked on (link in red) and enlarged using my photo manager and others cannot (no red link). Is it merely a matter of how the picture is posted? I always use the Additional Options. It's nice to be able to enlarge some of the photos posted.

That is what I do Tom, I am unaware of how else you can successfully attach a photo...

Put your photo(s) on a photo hosting site such as photobucket.  Then you can copy and paste the URL for any photo into your post.  Done in this way there is no limit on resolution or file size as there is with an "additional options" attachment..

I get that but is doing it that way the reason why some photos don't allow me any ability to see them other than how they appear?
Using "additional options", I browse my own photos on my computer and have the ability to manage them on my computer. When my photos appear, there is a link under them that allows someone to click on it and enlarge the photo if they like. What I don't get is why some photos, on the forum, provide me with a link allowing me to click on them and enlarge them but others do not. Like any photo I see on the internet, I suppose I could download them onto my computer and then work on them  but I'm curious, what different methods of uploading are being used that creates this difference? I guess what I'm saying is I prefer the "red link" and wish all photos gave me this capability.

Let's try an experiment.

Here are three images - identical except for the file sizes.

1600 pixels wide
800 pixels wide
600 pixels wide

Ducktrapper,

In the post above I see three images, all the same size, and a link below each. None of the links is red though... what are you seeing?

I see three photos, all the same size. Directly under each photo, I see a link in red, preceded by a green paperclip - Steinberger-GMT7A-600.jpg - that if I point my mouse at, I get the pointy finger thingy and then if I click on the link, it puts a download link on the bottom of my screen. When I click on that my "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" pops up with the photo. At that point, I can zoom in or out at will. The image does not stay on my computer after I close the window. I have noticed that this has changed since I first started doing this. At one time, all I had to do is click on the photo now I have to click on the link.

I get the same on my phone.

Two more - smaller images - testing to see what the forum software does with them. These are attachments and I made them small.

Hi Ducktrapper, Danny,

Here's what I think is happening.

First Post Above (3 images)
All three images were bigger than the default width of the forum software.

When I mouse over any of the Images, I see a hand, and when I click it, it opens the image in a new popup browser window and I see a the bigger versions (the actual size of the image).

I see the links, but they are not red. I'm probably using a different forum skin than you guys. Danny, I'm certain of that because I think one day you mentioned that quoted text was difficult to read.

Second Post Above (2 images)
These images were smaller than the default width of the forum software.

When I mouse over any of the Images, I see DON"T a hand, and when I click it, nothing happens.

In both posts - the links

The links allow me to actually download the images. Then when I open the downloaded images they open in the program that I have associated with image files. For you Ducktrapper that's the Microsoft Office Image manager. For others, that may be the default Windows Picture Viewer, and for others it could be the image editing software you last installed.

The images are only bigger than what you see in the forum if they are actually bigger than the forum software displays. So in my latest post above, both of those being smaller than the default width, they will not appear bigger if you download them.

And of course all of this only applies to images where I have actually added attached them as files. It would not apply in cases like this very last image where I have linked to it using the link to an image method

And this one will look very big and will truncate on the right side because it is 1600 pixels wide.
edit - the oversize thing will be fixed by the forum software and it will be displayed 800 pixels wide.

Okay - one last interesting note.

It appears that the maximum default width for an attached image in the forum in a browser is 400 pixels (800 pixels if linked). That makes sense. Anything bigger is scaled down to 800 pixels.

In my post above, the image is 1600 pixels wide. When I first loaded it, it appeared as 1600 pixels wide and that really messed up the page in the browser, but when I reloaded the page, the forum software had done its thing and resized the display to 800 pixels.

Here is a summary of what appears to be happening.

If you attach a file and it is wider than 400 pixels the forum software

 • makes a thumbnail version (400 pixels wide), and
 • displays the thumbnail version in the post, and
 • make the image linked to the full size version in a pop-up window, and
 • creates a link to allow a reader to download the original full-sized file. Ducktrapper, this is useful to you because then you can download and manipulate that larger original file.
If you attach a file and it is 400 pixels or less the forum software

 • displays the original file (no need for a thumbnail, and
 • creates a link to allow a reader to download the original full-sized file. This is probably of little interest because the if you download it, it will be no bigger than was displayed in the post.

Okay, that all make sense, now how do we get everyone to post pictures in a way that I can easily manipulate?  :whistling:
