I just purchased a new OM-40 RW. Once I got it home, I found my L-05 is 'easier' to play than the OM. The setup on the OM is fine, so I am thinking the OM came with medium strings, vs the lights on my OM.

Any forum members know what guage strings the OM-40 ( Long and McQuade models ) were set up with? I noticed on the Larrivee site that the OM-50 and 60 models were set up out of the box with lights.

BTW, stunning guitar.

From all my knowledge all of my traditional, 50 and 60 series, guitars came setup for mediums. They are 2006-2007 models.

Guitar shop tech measured them for me today with the calipers and says they are llights on it at the moment. They seem pretty stiff to me. I will probably try some EJ16s at the next change. Thanks for the reply.

The action at the nut is probably lower on the L-05 and/or the relief is set different. This is something that cannot be visually seen.

I think you are on to something there Roger. To the eye, it looks very similiar to the action on my L-05 ( which is set up very very well.). The luther is smoothing the fret ends today, and he did mention that the action might be a hair too high. Might ask him to drop it a hair at the nut.....

Dude, I totally know what you mean!!
every Larrivee OM ive played had super tight feeling strings, but were strung with D'Adarrio Lights! i also thought hey were mediums, in stark disbelief.

i dont think lowering the nut by any amount will help, especially if your feeling the tightness higher up the neck.
that indicates a tensile issue, not one of action/setup.
i'd try silk and steels, if you dont mind those strings. in my experience, using a pick wears em out a bit quicker than most,
but they sound and feel great. i like em for fingerpicking

Hi nolifebutbmx
Went thru the setup again with the tech. He felt that the D/G strings might be able to go down a hair at the nut, but that being said, the setup is quite low as it is. As we are going thru the end of 'humidification here, we agreed that I would play it as is for a while and see how it goes. The shop does free initial setups, and they will extend this should I want it adjusted again. Can't beat that :donut :donut

Still kind of strange to be that the OM would play 'tighter' than my L. It plays very well now, but I am looking for that 'plays like butter' setup.
