Hi all:

I am looking to add a new challenge, maybe too much of a challenge to my practices, as I am working towards a proficiency in fingerstyle guitar. I want to learn how to flatpick.

Can someone recommend a great beginners book on the subject, preferring something with a CD and DVD lessons and songs that are not older than me (58 years old).

Thank you.

What do you mean by "flatpick"? Flatpicking is generally associated with the Oldtime and Bluegrass genres, with fiddle tunes arranged for guitar. If you just mean using a flatpick to strum or play lead lines, that's something different than what the term "flatpicking" is usually associated with. For the latter, I'd reccomend just picking songs you like and learning to pick the chord changes out by ear using a flatpick to strum/pick rhythm and lead lines. If you are interested in the former, then Homespun or Stephen Grossman's Guitar Workshop have many many different educational DVDs:

Hi unclrob:

Thank you for the suggestions.

Sorry, I didn't make it more clear. What I would like to do is be able to play lead or as a substitute for fingerstyle.

What I am looking for is a book, which will provide lessons to work on, with a DVD so that I can see as well the technique that the instructor is using and to be able to play along with him in the instruction and / or song sample that is provided.

I know that there are many great players who are publishing books on the subject. However, as I have learned through my many years and purchasing disappointments, not all players are good teachers or communicators.
