This is a true thing of beauty.
A one-off with all of the wood (supposedly by JCL himself) stained black model SD-50 made in California.
Though I have a tough time swallowing that JCL would go to California to dye one guitar black without adding his signature to the paper soundhole label? Doesn't he usually do that to the guitars he works on personally?
Can anyone verify or corroborate this to be untrue?
Still some amazing eye-(and probably ear)-candy for the luthier-appreciation aesthete.

I have an SD-60 natural. My fantasy was to own mine AND an SD-50 sunburst... or perhaps a d-60 or even Pete Anderson model sunburst (just a great Larry sunburst in my collection) until I saw this. Now My fantasy wall would be 3 wood guitar hangers with my SD-60, some sort of sunburst and this black beauty:

Although I can't corroborate the story I have no doubt that it's true on the main points.     JCL does live in Calif. and does all of the sunbursts himself;  or so I've been told by people who should know.  Stands to reason that if he was going to make an all black guitar of this caliber he'd want to do the painting himself.  A good black paint job with this depth would require at least a few coats of top quality paint and a very deft touch.

I wouldn't place any importance on the fact that it's not signed.   He doesn't sign every guitar he works on and in fact, does sign some he doesn't have any connection to except that it was built in one of his shops.  My Forum III guitar was signed by him;  more precisely it has a label in it that was signed by him.   It wasn't in the guitar when he signed it.  All the78 original  Forum III's got label glued in that was signed by JCL for those guitars.   Jean didn't work on any of those although John Jr. in Vancouver and his crew produced 78 wonderful FIIIs for us.

But, as far as that SD-50 is concerned I have to admit that if it were a lefty I'd be really tempted to sell off a couple of my guitars and add that to my collection.   These days it takes a lot to tempt me but I'm not immune when I see something really special.

Oh My God.

I have been fantasizing about a black Larrivee sd-50 but didnt think they made them. Now i see it can be done. Wow.

I remember when Jason at Notable sold one of those. I thought it was beautiful then and I still do. I really had GAS then....not quite as tempted any more but I do think it is a  striking guitar.

You are correct...MOF he lives just a couple of blocks from me.
