As the title implies, I'm interested in hearing some first-hand experiences from folks who have/have had the SD-50.  I'm seriously considering one.  It'd be my first 12er, and I've been telling myself forever that's what I wanted next....

BUT...I'm also very intrigued by the L-05MT.....arghhh!

Somebody counsel me....and have some  :donut2 :donut2 :coffee!

Yes Larry, I meant 12 fret  :bgrin:

What do you think of it?

Upon further review....and after speaking to a dealer....I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I was unaware of the width (1 7/8) of the SD-50.  I just can't go that.

So I guess if I go 12 fret it'll be something else....bummer.

I could be wrong, but I think older ones has a 1 3/4" nut, so if you find one used you might be in luck.  As I said, I might be talking total rubbish, it just seems to ring a bell in the back of my mind.

Thanks Ben...I'll be on the lookout.  I only wish I had been around and looking when the FIII guitars came along...seems to be the best of the 2 worlds I'm looking for....always late to the party!   :roll

what about an 000-50? 12 fret, 1 3/4" nut.

000-50 and 000-60 have 1 13/16 nut. It might feel a little wide at first with 1 13/16 or 1 7/8, but little tiny Asian kids, with little itty bitty hands and fingers, are all over youtube playing Bach pieces and just about anything else on 2" wide classical guitars...........................

Oops, sorry.  Again the older ones had a narrower nut I think.  Possibly.  I'll shut up now before I make any more mistakes.

I understand what you say GA-ME, but I think in my case the larger issue is "what I'm used to"....and Classical guitar-sized neck widths aren't it.  I actually happened quite by accident to play on a classical guit on Monday....I tooled around for about 10-20 minutes.  While I'm sure I could adjust with time, I'm looking for something different now.

And besides....if I got that size, then I'd be forced to try to PLAY like those Itty Bitty hankds you were referring to...and it ain't gonna happen!  :laughin:

If you want to talk about 12 frets, hogtops and L05MTs, I am happy to share my own experience.  Just send me a PM and we can work out a time.  Have a 12 fret hogtop Martin 00017s, a Larrivee parlor, and a Larrivee L05MT (and very small hands).  Also, if you are at all close to Washington, DC, happy to invite you to come try mine and let you form your own opinions.  Always nice to talk music with people from the forum.

Hey geddins
I can't possibly pass this thread without saying that the SD-50 must be my favourite Larrivee model (you did ask). Yes the nut width could/would be uncomfortable for some, but that instrument is so universal and versatile, not to mention its tone and tons of headroom.
I think the Martin D-18VS is the similar model with a 1 3/4" neck, but I just love my SD.

I've had my SD-50 about a year. I've played a lot of other guitars at shops during that time and there were only a few I liked as well and they cost $1500 to $5,000 MORE than what I paid for my new SD-50.

I bought my SD-50 BECAUSE of the wide 1 7/8 neck - I came from a nylon string background.
I play ALL fingerstyle picking. The tone, articulation, sustain, overtones of the trebles is perfect for the melody playing I do and also for the arpeggiated picking rhythms.

The SD-50 is called a cannon because it has such great volume.
I don't use an amp at home where I do 98 % of my playing - so the extra volume is nice.

That pretty much ends this thread.  000-50 might be your Larrivee, or find an LS-03 for sale.  Good luck.
Play it daily for best results.

Wonder how these would sell if they offered a narrower nut width?
