The weakness of the GAS

I was doing well for more than a year, I think.

I stumbled on this item this morning and, in mortal fear of "the one that got away" syndrome, pulled the trigger.

This is the one Martin that I've been dying to have since not buying one during the two year or so production run at the turn of the century (that sounds silly, doesn't it?). I've almost purchased a 000-15s on several occasions but decided to hold out for the bindings and nicer finish.

Nice choice and you will be very happy. I played one last Monday but my GAS and my retirement plan are both in remission. Check out the kudos from the 15 series owners (especially slotheads) at the Martin Forum (UMFG).

Thanks to all.

I should have it by Wednesday or Thursday. I hope the weather isn't too wretched here in the Northeast.

I've always found the 15 series to be the most consistent guitars in the Martin line. Not much to look at, but they all sound great; assuming one likes the all-hog sound. A lot of the others seem to be much more variable, regardless of the series.

Maybe hog tops are just less sensitive to old strings and bad set ups.

The 15 series always draws my attention, but the 17 series were just wonderful for sound and lovely, understated aesthetics.

I've often wondered why Martin never brought them back.

Now if they would just make a D-17 S or Larrivee would make a 03 hog top version of the SD-50, I might actually buy a dreadnought.

SD-03MT?  A fantastic idea!

Not meaning to change topic but I see you have a Durango jumbo in your stable. Just like to know what you think of it. Started to by one a while back, but bought a jumbo Tak instead. Was'nt happy with it so I sold it but would still like to get a jumbo of some type. Thanks

I bought it about a year and a half ago. I was laid up for almost six months and was about to lose my disability and my job. I decided that I had to face the fact that I might be reducing my stable to a few that were absolute favorites. Therefore, I wanted to find a daily beater/couch guitar. Since I wanted a jumbo, I decided to give the Durango a try.

I was quite amazed at how good this guitar sounds. Considering it didn't cost much more than pickguard on my custom Mitchell, I was even more amazed.

Good points:

  • Pretty responsive.
  • Nice range and balance
  • Cheap.
  • Good playability with minimal fuss in the setup.
  • Seems fairly light considering the price point. This may contribute to the responsiveness.

Caveats (again, this is a sub $300 guitar):

  • Intonation: it's good but by no means perfect. the older the strings, the worse it gets (faster than with better guitars)
  • The finish is a bit heavier than is necessary.
  • The tuners are cheap and finicky, but I've seen worse.
  • Makes me wonder if the cost difference for my mid to high end guitars is worth it.

It sounds better to me with PB strings. The back and sides are sycamore laminate. It's not a bad looking guitar, but I could do without the slightly busy headstock decal. Other than that, I would recommend that anyone looking for a good low end guitar try this one out.
