...ugh.

I have just a beauty of a D-03r, but I just cant get the OM out of my head.  I play mostly at home, and that OM is just so comfortable.  Anyone have any experiences to share in regards from dropping down from a Dread to the OM body style?

The fact that you described your D-03r as a "beauty" tells me that you might kick yourself if you let it go. In the end, the D and OM will or should give you two different sounds and I would find a way to keep both. You should be able to find a used OM at a reasonable price because they pop up from time to time.

I play mostly at home too and have both a Martin D-35 and an OM-35 and I wouldn't trade either of them. The dread has a more pronounced bass while the OM has a balanced tone across the board and a low profile neck that is really easy to play. I put a new bone saddle on my D-35 in January because she was getting jealous and now the playing time is more evenly split. For example, they each got about one hour last night. I often tune one of them to Open G or Open D and leave the other in standard or dropped D.

I also have a flamed maple Larrivee Parlour and LV-03MT 12 string that get to share the spotlight too. You'll note that everything I own is different. Next on the list is a National Estralita (resonator guitar). Starting with the D like you did and adding an OM and then an L (or a 12) or getting an all Sapele guitar is a good set of goals to have.

I have a Martin Dread, A Larrivee L-03 and an OM 03R. All great guitars for great music.

When I am playing for a group of people the Martin is the guitar of choice. I recently used it in a video shoot and the plugged in sound was great. This guitar has the best plugged in sound.

My L-03 is my play outside guitar. It has a nice woody sound and it is easy to play. It will take mediums or lights with no problem. It is using mediums right now for more sound.

My OM-03 R has a very nice sound and looks wonderful with the maple binding. I have it set up with lights and the output is a little less. It will do almost anything the other guitars will do. I will bring this guitar to a small group or I play it with a band. I put a rare earth blend on it so i get a more "electric" sound with it. If I was more of a fingerstyle guitarist, I would have the perfect setup with this guitar. I recently plugged in straight to my Recording setup and played fingerstyle the sound was very good. I made a stereo image using a mic on one side and the pickup on the other.

When it comes to what I really want to hear, the D always wins.

Get both.

My D-28 is ever so different than the OM-03RE...sound, bass in particular--one is just bigger--makes a bigger sound.  For that very reason I love the OM--it is smaller size, more comfortable for sitting around and playing and a general all around tone that is just right!

Another vote for keep/get BOTH. :cheers

I am in the same boat.
I have a d05 that I love and a Martin dread that I just picked up.
but.......I still think about the om 3,i love that guitar , the size, the feel and the over all
quality of Larrivee, but it just doesnt put out the dread sound. But I do find the sound of Larrivee better over a Martin Om.
In fact ,I played an Om today and started thinking about it again.
Bad gas .....
let me know what you do.I would be very interested to know how it turns out.

Hate to be a "bandwagoner", but I let one guitar go 18 years ago...she wasn't even a great one (Yamaha beater) and it makes me sick every time I think about her.  :crying: Every instrument has it's special feel, sound and personality. Enjoy your D and wait patiently until you can get the OM...it will be all the sweeter when you do.

You need to have both. Keep one for alternate tunings. It's nice having the OM. I sit on the couch with the tv tuned to a ball game with the sound off and and play and play and...

Alternate tunings? I completely forgot about that! My favorite is (from the 6th string down) B - Fsharp - B - Fsharp - B - Csharp! It works best on a guitar with medium gauge strings. That's where I keep my Taylor Jumbo.

By the way, I played a D03r for the first time just a couple of weeks ago...what a cannon! Pretty sure that's my next one!
