I pulled the MSDS for the Mirror Glaze Professional #M17 plastic cleaner and swirl remover to check for silicone content (couldn't attach the PDF), as well as th #10 polish and #18 detailer. Chemical nature components follow:
Light Distillate, Hydrotreated Distillate, Natural Diatomaceous Earth, Glycerin was listed.

In speaking with Meguiar's this morning 949-752-5784 (11:43 AM Rick) the Mirror glaze plastic cleaners #17, #18, #10 and re finisher #09 have absolutely NO SILICONE content.

Whew, I have used these for several months now with great results and was concerned.
He did confirm Scratch X does indeed have silicone.

I emailed them and got the same answer:

To answer you question, ScratchX does contain silicone and is not body shop safe. A good replacement product would be M09 Swirl remover because it is body shop safe.

This is most distressing. I used Scratch-X on the headstock of my L05 and have recommended it to others. I've used it extensively on the finish of my Rickenbackers as it is the process (Scratch-X / Zymol) recommended by users over at RickResource and even the Rickenbacker forum itself.

Meguire's can change their formulas at any time.   How many years has Scratch X and Crystal no 2 been on these forums.  Now all those guitars have silicone impregnation.

Disgusting.    Unconscionable.  No honor there.

How many forums?    For how many years?      Yet they've propered and even added there own Fender kit.............gee wonder where that idea came from.

Don't trust anything you're told on the phone.  And the MSDS sheets can be changed anytime.

If you pull the current MSDS for Scratch X, it only has two ingredients.  No silicone listed.  So I'm not that trusting of any of their other MSDS listings, if they can change the formula without updating the MSDS.

Shame, because I liked the product and used it on several guitars.  Going to have to go with a product like Petros...something marketed by a guitar maker.

Unless anyone else has any other recommendations?

Life is too short to drink cheap beer.

Unless you plan on refinishing, what's the problem?  I've played guitar for almost 25 years and have yet to have one refinished...

Well the problem is only when you refinish it, planning doesn't make much difference

OK, but I plan on never having a guitar refinished   I also don't use any of these products with or without silicone, I just play the guitars and clean them with a  rag.

Since I have used Scratch-X liberally on all of my Rickenbackers and on the headstock of my L05, I checked with the experts over at RickResource forum.

Paul Wilczynski, who has the experience of years of Rickenbacker refinishes, pretty well pooh-pooh's the thought that the product has silicone. He states he has had no refin problems with guitars which have had Scratch-X on them. The MSDS shows no silicone. I am going with the expert and not going to worry about this product anymore.

I'm with ya, Pete.

STEVE:

If possible, would you kindly re-open the glossing your guitar thread on the FAQ child board.  I, for one, want to make some edits and alterations to the information I've provided there in addition to the "gloss at your own risk" warning.

Thank you.
