Pickguards and bridges (both represented in the image below) are the two primary reasons I don't have any Gibson acoustics here. ENTIRELY SUBJECTIVE and a matter of individual taste to be sure, but these things prevent me from being objective when I listen to them, and I realize this reflects a bit of a personal defect on my part.

And for the record, yes, I understand that neither of these are featured on the very popular J45 (although that bridge looks upside-down to my eye).  :winkin:

However, if I ever bought another mandolin I could certainly welcome an F5 or F12 and fully embrace it.

At one time I had 3 Gibson Guitars, a 93 Gospel, a 85 dotneck ES-335, and a 2001 Hummingbird.  I sold them all over a period of a few years. Decided I wouldn't ever buy another one.  Then I saw this last year and decided to rethink my position.   It's a pretty nice little guitar.  Gibson CJ-165.

That's the problem with any (common use) product in a growing global culture, when an awareness is publicly raised about a lack of product quality, that has come to categorize such a raised awareness as bashing. The sensitivity today has gone overboard to an extent that no one can A/B a product and (dare) give reasons for not choosing one over the other without being criticized for it.

Gibson, to me, was never a contender for my money. I can't say why for reasons given above so I refrain from blunt honesty. Let those who find them rewarding give glowing reports, which simply means we have divergent impressions of quality instruments. Such glowing reports must also be perceived, and understood to imply to those who would be outwardly oppressed for saying so, that their own reports of polar opposite impressions lurk between the lines of glow. It's that unspoken reality that the agents of altruism won't tolerate without bashing when aired. That is the character of the AGF to such extent that I banned myself from the latent dishonesty at work there.

You don't like them but you can't say why... That's exactly what I was talking about. This internet culture where everyone wants to play critic but few have anything of value to add. Looking at your post, I can tell you write a lot of Amazon reviews.

I'm a big believer in respecting personal tastes. If someone does or doesn't like something, that's grand. However, that doesn't mean I'll respect crowd thinking and stereotypes.

Anyhow, I was cool with the subject until the post about "oppression" (lol). In order not to perpetuate a big flame fest I'll not come back to this thread and if the quoted poster or, anyone else wants to argue, do it via private message rather than here.

One thing's for sure - no one makes a sunburst like Gibson.

You're right about that.  Of course Jean does a pretty good job too   :thumb

Indeed - I've always liked that one. Let me know if you ever want to sell it (to a fellow lefty...)

I've played many Gibsons (never owned one due to lots of reasons), and I've played a few that have been really nice -- in fact, many have been really nice, but they do have their own sound, just like Martin/Larrivee/etc.  One of the very best guitars I've ever demo'ed was a Southern Jumbo many years ago - it's tone and playability have stayed in my mind since then.

I don't think I've played any that would make me trade my L09 or my D18, though.

Got tired of waiting...picked this up instead.

It's so new, the warranty card says "1/11/22"! But it already sounds pretty good, and will only get better!

I've got around 6 acoustics that are going to go up for sale soon. I'm kinda watching the market to see if it's going to get any better, or if I should just bite the bullet and list them.

I was in Nashville a couple of months ago and went to the Gibson Garage one afternoon while my wife napped.

To my recollection I've never played a Gibson in my life, electric nor acoustic.

I sat down in their acoustic room with a J-45. I have to say, it was an amazing player both picked and fingerstyle. Sounded good to my ears but there were others in the store so I can't honestly speak to the sound quality. Too much ambient noise w/others playing, talking, etc.

I've never owned one but have played plenty of J45s in shops over the years, and when you find a good one there's really nothing else quite like it.  Very different from the Larrivee sound, which I ultimately prefer, but wow, some Gibsons can really blow you away.

I have heard others say that the J-45's are hit or miss. They are gorgeous, but I guess I was always too lazy to go hunting.

I did a serious cross country tour, back when I was young and trying to be famous.
opening act in nice big halls for a famous pop star.

1953 old J-50, was my travelling companion, it came in the trunk of a used car from Prince Edward Island- mid seventies .
I think my Larrivee at the time was held hostage by my girlfriend.

The Gibson was beat up pretty good, but sounded fine, a lot of shows, and pics to prove.

like so many other great guitars, long gone, as working musicians tend to have to sell the good ones to survive.

just my old man rumour in my spare time, legend in my own mind 2 cents worth of memories.
"Senior" member means "old" right?
Like over 50?

Too many guitars to list here.
Too few brain cells to be bothered with...
