I was thinking about this as I'm trying to "downsize" ... even as I have more guitars in the pipeline (hah)!

The Pimentel classical was on Reverb for less than 24 hours, and someone paid me full price! Maybe I wasn't asking enough, but I sold it for more than I paid for it 24 years ago (yeah, I know; inflation...).

If you'd ask that question a few years ago my answer would be quite different.  At one time I owned 2 Gibsons a Martin, a Guild, an Alvarez and a Japanese Martin copy called a "Mountain."

I own only Larrivee acoustic guitars at the moment and it will probably stay that way unless Reverend Mikey wants to get rid of his Martin D-35    :whistling:

And this was weird - the guy who bought it paid me MORE than I was asking (around $25 more plus the shipping fee)! When does that ever happen? I owned a few Gibson's and Martin's and Alvarez's {the 70's lawsuit one's} in my time.

The only two missing from my list are a custom cherry dulcimer and a Little Martin which stays at my son's house when it's not traveling the world with him in the Army. That guitar which was built in Mexico has been in NY, PA, VA, WA, Germany, Iraq (twice), back to Germany, TX and now Kansas.

Played the Alvarez last night while I watch the Bears/Seahawks game and it had a nice ring to it.

Besides my Larrivee C-10 and my 1964 Martin D-21, I've got several others, but these are my favorites.

Thanks.  I've slowed down on buying and selling over the past several years.  It's a good group of instruments for my uses (flesh and nail for solo fingerstyle and classical), all mid-sized (between 00 and mini-jumbo), with a variety of b&s and top woods.  They don't overlap too much and they complement each other well.  Each luthier has done a great job making them.

I don't really have a favorite.  I enjoy each one and rotate through them each week or so.

Sold my Emerald X-20 on Christmas Day, shipped to Louisiana on the 26th... I loved the tone of the guitar (unplugged and plugged in) but the neck got weird fat as you went up to the higher frets - really strange on such a modern guitar design.

Also have my Larry C-10 and Martin D-35 for sale - both great guitars, but I have others that do what they do, only better. (I've been blown away by how good the Martin J-40 is! It does everything the D-35 does, only better - it's a crazy good guitar - as good as my Custom J-18).

Will be getting others listed in January - gotta keep simplifying, as there is another (Martin Model America 1) coming sometime in the next couple months...

My view of the horizon has changed.  Instead of living for today, I'm looking much farther ahead. I no longer harbor delusions about the guitars as investments. Music and playing are more important now than they have ever been.

I have fewer instruments without the near-duplicates and the bragging-rights trophies.

9. Need to add the 3/4 size Yamaha I just bought to my signature line

Well, after selling my J-45, today I found a nice J-35 on Reverb - it will arrive Friday...so now I have the Gibson brand back in the fold...  :rolleye: (I'm hopeless!)

Finally arrived today...2018 (used) Gibson J-35 (now out of production for some reason - I think because of the new incoming cheap models that were in its same price range.)

After changing the strings to 80/20 Bronze mediums (which I don't care for on anything but Gibsons) and a slight tweak of the truss rod, this thing plays and sounds glorious!

I will say - Gibson's build quality is not at the level of Larrivee or Martin (or Taylor), but when they get it right, it has a sound you won't find too many other places. I will say the woods on this one are very nice - sorry the pics aren't clearer - I'll get some better ones in sunlight soon:

With today's trade of my parlor for an OM-02, I'm still at three Larrivees, one Martin, and one Lowden (plus a few electrics, which is a whole 'nother story).  

The Martin is a beautiful oddity: a sunburst Custom Shop D-28 Marquis slope dread made for Make'n Music in Chicago that is basically Martin's take on a Gibson Advanced Jumbo.  I visited Make'n 9 years ago and fell in love with this guitar and immediately ordered it when I got back home.  In one guitar, it satisfied my thirst for a nice Martin and a Gibson slope D.

The Lowden is an O22.  It's a beautiful guitar, but it was a bit of a problem child at first.  I might tell that story another time.

Three- Yamaha FG700 (First guitar), Simon and Patrick Showcase Rosewood (Second guitar, forever guitar until I discovered Larrivee), Larrivee D-40r (Third guitar, now I want another Larrivee).

Well, this picture was taken after I sold my Martin D-15 and before I acquired my 000-50, LS-03 (Forum III), D-40R, L-05 Custom, and P-05.  So I've had a few.  Never owned a Taylor though.   Funny,  I had sent a deposit for a beautiful Taylor sunbrust but was informed that the guitar sold to someone else before my deposit arrived.   By chance I saw an ad for Larrivee guitars in a guitar magazine right after that.  That's how this long strange trip began.   :roll

Just traded my Gibson J-35. Nice guitar, but not as nice tonally as my Martin J-18 and Larrivee L-05, so it's gone. I'm in a downsizing mode - got around 6 acoustics to sell, plus maybe an electric or three. I've found my "tonal niche" - so it's getting easier to move some pieces along. 

In this house we now have:
Larrivée,  Valencia, Taylor, First Act, Yamaha and the latest 1970 Sears & Roebuck Silvertone

With the addition of this one ... five. Austin, the black hawk. I was banging out John Prine songs on it last night, entertaining my wife and our friend. Sounded pretty good.

Down one more guitar (but not one more brand): a Martin OM-21 ships out tomorrow. Nice guitar, but doesn't have the balance and control of my Larrivee OM-05. The upside is I sold it for about $150 more than I paid for it back in February! Nice!

Currently have 5 more lefties listed on Reverb. Got a bite on the Taylor GS Mini today; I countered, but they declined to take me up on it. It's okay; it will sell - "time-- is on my side."

Martin 000-15SM went out last Friday, new owner will have on Wednesday. The Martin OM came back (story in another thread, I believe); I am becoming more attached to it at the moment, so it can stick around.

I accepted some guy's bid on one of my Ovations, then never heard from him again. Wish Reverb could do something about these "no shows"! Oh well.

Retirement and travel on the horizon, so I'm due for a major overhaul this year and will be releasing 7 guitars from 5 of these makers back into the stream.

Not quite able/ready to retire yet (I'm 61 1/2), but I'm trying to downsize and simplify, just to help me focus more on the guitars I really enjoy. (Predominantly my Larrivees and Martins).

Accepted another offer on my Ovation L717 early this morning - hoping to get paid so I can ship it out today. It really does feel good to "lighten the load" - especially of instruments I'm not playing anymore.

Sold my nylon string Taylor this morning - no Taylors left. One Ovation left to sell. After that I'll need to decide if I'm going to start downsizing the good stuff (Martins and Larrivees). Not sure I'm ready (or need) to do that yet. (First post on page 1 edited to reflect changes...)

I'm not going to add these two to the list:
1971 Sears and Roebuck parlor sized guitar (I am trying my hand at making flat top floating bridges - the original must have been made from aspen or poplar or another soft wood and dyed black - strings have cut WAY down into it)  Paid $15 for it in a chip-board case.  It's in very nice condition for that type of a guitar.  I may or may not sell it, still deciding.  I think I might have the only one of these with a compensated bridge on it!

90's era Peavey Raptor Plus.  $20 purchase that came in a $30 Fender gig bag!  Ceramic pups, with huge pole pieces. I was going to try out the 'convert a ceramic pup to alnico' trick on this, but I cannot find any pre-magnetized pole pieces this large in diameter.   It's got a cool Jazz bass-like/offset body, and 3 on a side tuners on a headstock that looks like the Wolfgang models.  Totally disassembled right now.  Trying to decide if I should part it out or not, as the neck is a really nice single-piece maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard, but with a weird truss rod adjustment 'wheel'.

That weird truss rod adj. wheel is very similar to the adjustment wheel on Larrivee's most recent RS-4 and RS-2 models; it's very easy and convenient to use at the end of the fingerboard...just put the long side of an appropriate-sized Allen wrench in one of the wholes in the wheel and turn it. Very easy to adjust your truss rod. It's a design I really like.

I think I used to have a lefty version of one of these Peavey Raptor's (maybe with a different name?). A very offset Strat-style body, 3+3 headstock like yours. Not a bad guitar, but another one that blew through during my years of gas...

FINALLY! Just accepted a counter offer for the last Ovation I had for sale (and the last acoustic I was planning on selling...but there might be one or two more eventually).

So no more Ovations, Taylors or Gibsons in my stable currently. If I could find the right Gibson J-45 or J-35, I wouldn't mind having one again. But I loved the tone of the 45, but not the intonation, and the intonation of the 35, but not the tone... so there you go.

I've tried getting Gibson's thumpy thick tone out of my Larrivee L-05, but it's just not quite there - I think it's the longer scale length for one thing.   

Maybe have Larrivee build a short scale L-05 (with a sunburst top)? Maybe that's the answer...   :whistling:

Well, the buyer bailed (again). This is happening to me more and more often on Reverb...what's up with that?

I reported him, but there's not much Reverb can do but close their account - and they can get right back on with a different e-mail and new "name" and start trolling again.

But a couple times when this has happened I've actually had another, better offer for the guitar and it has finally sold - so I just need to be patient. But was a letdown, and what a pain.

Just sold my Takamine 12-string on Reverb (it was "replaced" with a Martin 12 - I like the Martin's tone AND neck [!] better). Will ship out tomorrow.

Now I have several electrics that are going on the block...and one of my Larrivee acoustics (hint: the newest one).

This intentional downsizing is quite liberating, I can focus more/better with fewer instruments that I really enjoy. Nothing really wrong with the others, they just aren't getting played, and they're a distraction (and require string changes). (My wife doesn't mind, either!).

Uhh ... wow, this is a neat thread, a real eye-opener.  And, I had to go look and total.  I have 4 different brands of guitars for a total of 7 guitars.  I need to thin out the inventory.  Specific guitars are listed below.

Meanwhile, this morning I FINALLY sold my other Ovation - this time it's really sold! So I'm down to just Martins, Larrivees, a cheap Fender and a couple cute little Cordoba's.

I moved out the plastic Ovation just in time for another "plastic" guitar to come in - the Martin Johnny Cash DX I have on order...

After retiring and doing more traveling, I severely cleaned out the closet and I offloaded my Larry All Koa Parlor, my Larry 00V 03, my MIJ 50s Tele and 80s Fender Rivera Super Champ. I kept my Koa DV 10K, my Koa C 10k, my Breedlove style O mandolin an got a CA Cargo carbon fiber guitar that I can take anywhere and not worry about. As you get older,...less is more.

This thread's been quiet (again) for a few months, but I'll draaaaag it back up again...

...I've sold two Martins in the past 24 hours, and have two more I'll be selling, one is listed on Reverb now, the other will be when I can get some better pictures of the cracks in the top's nitro finish (otherwise it's a great guitar; OM-21)...

...I love these guitars, but the narrow, 2 5/32" saddle spacing on the current Standard Series Martins is hard on my 62 y/o arthritic finger-picking hand; it gets sore in 5-10 minutes. I will be buying a couple more Martins to replace them (in time) with wider spacing...

Meanwhile, I decided to pull my Larrivee Custom L-05 that I had listed for sale, and I'm glad I did; it's sounding better and better all the time. I put a set of DR Strings Veritas on it and they are a perfect match for this guitar. The L-05 and my Martin J-18 Custom are neck and neck for my favorite guitar right now.

I have 2-3 Martins waiting to be sold. Trouble is, no one has any dough. Listed is my OM-18V, 000-18 and my OMC-28.

I just sold two on Reverb in about 24 hours - one was priced well north of $2K. Where are you trying to sell yours? What's your shipping radius (how far will you ship)?

I think there's some money out there - people are starting to get their tax refunds...

If your 000-18 was a lefty, I'd be interested...

Out of a total of 9 guitars there are 4 brands.   5 are Larrivees.   The non-Larrivees, include a Fender, 2 Grietsch, and a Johnson resonator.   The Gibsons, Martins, and Guilds are all gone now

Australia Mike, where are you Mike? Yes that 000-18 is one of the earlier 2014 models. Lovely guitar with the 1/4" scalloped bracing and 1 3/4" nut.

Sold/shipped another Martin last Friday (updated in first post).

I'm now at 3 Larrivees, 3 Martins. I seem to have reached some sort of equilibrium (although one more of each may go soon...so maintaining that equilibrium...).

Decided that I was missing having a nylon string guitar to play, so started looking for something in the lowest price range possible, but with two caveats: I wanted a solid top, and it had to be spruce. Yes, cedar is warm and nice, but I like the punchier clarity of spruce with nylon strings. I was also looking for something with less than a 2" nut, but that was harder to find.

I spent more than I wanted to (what a shock...), but I found an older Yairi 700, handmade by Sadao Yairi (gotta do some more research on how he fits into the Yairi family). Not only does the guitar have great specs, it was built in 1976, my H.S. graduation year, so that was kind of cool as well...and this will then be my oldest guitar.

The listed price isn't what I paid; I do feel like i got a decent price on this for what it is: old, Made in Japan, solid Spruce top... and actually, Rosewood back and sides (the listing says Mahogany, but the seller confirmed that that was wrong). The back may be solid Rosewood - on many of these guitars the backs were solid and the sides were laminated...

Should arrive Friday; I'll give a new guitar day update then...

In looking through some things here, I realize I never added my Larrivee L-09 FM here... probably because it's a Larrivee, so I posted about it in the Larrivee Forum HERE. (http://www.larriveeforum.com/smf/index.php?topic=54054.0)

Not a big deal - don't know how many folks are even hanging around here these days... but I will say I'm still really loving this Maple 09 ... which from a conversation with John Jr. about the serial number (04 8493), might have been called an L-04 back in '88/'89 when it was new.

John said Jean tried all kinds of things back then, and some stuff stuck and some didn't in terms of series numbering nomenclature.  Interesting Larrivee history for nerds like me! (John thought it was interesting, too, as he knows his dad's quirks!)

Once I receive payment, another Martin, my OM-21, is going bye-bye. Wonderful, responsive guitar, but I like the balance of my OM-05 better (and we have a loooong history), and also the overall volume and balance of the L-bodied Larrivees (along with my Jumbo-bodied Martins).

Another Martin is on order with the Custom Shop (J-28 style), probably see it around the beginning of 2021.

In my last post, the Martin OM-21 was sold; it's been replaced by another Martin, the DSS-15M StreetMaster.

The StreetMaster guitars are part of the 15 Series with a simple dovetail, and these have Martin's standard top bracing (rather than the old simple "A-bracing" pattern used on some 15 Series hog tops). This guitar sounds loud and open with strong bass... amazing tone for this price point. The only thing I might change is the tuners, if they don't loosen up a little (this has been mentioned by others who buy these). I don't really want to invest in $125-200 Waverly's just to get some decent "aged" tuners for this thing; Gotoh makes a set that should fit the aesthetics (if I need to change 'em).

Martin is definitely making some great guitars in the 21st century.
