Title: Difference between L10 and OM10
Post by: winmorgan on July 31, 2006, 10:59:21 PM
Can someone tell me the difference(s) between the L10 and the OM10?  The two I'm comparing are both Venitian cutaways.  I know the L10 has a 1 3/4 nut, don't yet know about the OM10.

Thanks.

The L body is bigger and deeper, more akin to a Gibson slope dread than an OM size.  Usually louder & deeper tone.

Completely different guitars.

I think the Mahogany L's sounds better than Rosewood L's.  However, my money always goes to a rosewood (or maple) over mahogany on an OM.  I am not trying to preach, just pointing out the fact that they are as different as day and night.

Thanks for the two comments.  The two guitars I'm comparing are both all koa (koa tops, not spruce).  Do I gather correctly that the L10 is bigger than the OM10?  Any other comments or thoughts about the differences (or about anything else) are most welcome.

Yes, L10 is bigger than OM10 physically and sonically.
Other things are pretty much the same.

IMO, if you like big & deep bass, go with L.

L has 16" bout and a more voluptuous waist (more effective resonating top area).  Koa is a cousin of Mahogany.  You will probably find the L10 to have a sweeter sound than a OM10.  (OM10 will be slightly more zzzzzingy).

If it's Koa, I would probably go for the L10.  Koa OM's just haven't done it for me in the past.

Dear Jiyang and Calvin,

Thanks *so* much for the advice and the explication.  Your comments are much appreciated...I think I now have a much better idea of the sound qualities of both.  Guess all I have to do now is find an L10 that's all koa.    :WNK>

Cheers,

Win

Believe it or not, that one is not an LV-10KK, it's mis-marked.  It's an OMV-10KK

You're right! That is an OMV not a LV.

that's too funny....I didn't even notice.    I just corrected another dealer last week on an OMV-10 maple (they had it listed as an L-10)

They sound different, play different, feel different.  Yet you can't go wrong with either.  I have one of each.

Wow!  What a wealth of comments...thanks to all.  The other one I was looking at was on eBay (listed as an OMV10 all koa) but it was yanked by the seller after two days.  It had attracted 1 bid for $1800.  When I asked the guy why he'd pulled it, he replied someone had offered him a "large sum" for it, so he ended the auction.  I asked what it sold for but got no reply.

Is it really possible that Elderly has overestimated the price by that much ($1,500)??

Also, probably a dumb question but how can you tell the OMV10 from the LV10 by looking?  I know it must be the shape but I don't know the difference.

Finally, anyone know whether there were/are ANY LV10s made which are all koa?

Thanks again...

L on the left, OM on the right.

Yes, there were a few LV10's made in all koa. How many I don't know, but I have seen them for sale used, from time to time.

The drawings and specs are a big help, as is the info that some LV10s were made in koa.  Thank you!

OMV-60 you might want to look at if you are into rosewood.

L's look like a pear.  Just remver that.
