im pretty sure that is maple on the sides of that guitar. its looking pretty good in the pics so far and i think the second bracing pattern is better than the first one you have picked. i cant wait to see more pics. i havent had a chance to get online much lately, but i try to look in as much as i can.

Thanks Frets....I've been wanting to work on the guitar, but I'm more focused on getting a job by the time I get out of college.  It's really sucking up all my time.  So you think I should put maple on the back then to match it up?  If so...what type of maple?  Would flamed look weird since the sides aren't flamed?

The back and sides of that guitar looks like spruce?? Hmm, I have no idea what kind of wood it is.

Spruce????  No way...the back was a veneer maple...the top is spruce...and the sides....well,  I don't know, the sides could be spruce....but that's just weird...

Does look a little like the silking one would see in spruce.

However, if I had to guess I would say mahogany or maybe even birch (this is based not by appearance but more by materials often used in older budget guitars).

This is really an interesting thread, I am thinking about messing with my old Harmony and seeing if I can improve its sound.

Keep up the great work didy!,

id say go with some plain maple just to match, maple is easy to get and easy to work with (plain maple at least) and itll match nicely.
