It would appear to me that a satin guitar would open up easier, and have a better tone, yet, the gloss guitar seems to be the "nicer" guitar.  Is the gloss preferred because of any superior sound quality or is it just for esthetic reasons?

I used to think that, but I have gloss guitars that sound way better than my satin ones...

My understanding is that they are essentially the same except a) additives to make the satin satin and b) buffing of the gloss finish.

That is also my understanding.  I don't believe a satin or gloss version of the same finish material and method makes any difference in the sound of the guitar.  To me any differences are esthetic only.  Gloss is more expensive to achieve given some extra time required to buff the guitar.
