I don't find much available on the sound.  Curious to know how it compares to the L-03.

Didn't think they were being made.

They have made some in Mahogany and Rosewood.  I believe Mike in Lytle has played them both?

http://www.larriveeforum.com/smf/index.php?topic=50213.0 for my review.
Cannot totally compare to an L-03 (lack of experience), but I am sure you would be happy with either an L-03 or L-40M.
I do own an L-05 and two C-05s, which are mahogany guitars comparable to L-03.
The price difference is minimal between a new L-03 and L-40M.
Much of it is the way the guitars look, head stock and tuners.
The bracing is different, but I am not an expert judge on that.
I am a standard L-body fan. Because I like the standard head stock I will stick with the standard.
Now.... if Larrivee came out with an L-40-05 or L-40-09 or L-40-10 I might rethink things. I do not think that is going to happen.
MHO only.

Reading these different posts on all the models makes me wish I had a place to go where I could check them out. Far west Texas really stinks as far as guitar shops goes crying

Albuquerque may be your best bet.

Yeah, but it's a 4 hour drive and I'm not familiar with shops there.

I played a rosewood and a mahogany L40 at Elderly right after they came out. I didn’t care for them, as the sound was very bassy  and not as clear and balanced as the standard L models. This one just one example of each, so that doesn’t mean that they arent well loved by others. Play if possible, check YouTube samples, and check on the return policy.

On the other hand, if you like a big bass-dominant sound, they may be just perfect for you.

I own a L-40R and think it is a nice guitar.  It has a big sound like a dreadnaught should.  I like the shape and look of it more than the standard dreadnaught bluegrass guitar.  More of a rounded upper and lower bout.  The neck on mine is really nice and flat and easy to play.  The satin finish gives it a more earthy look and sound.  I don't know if its just me but does a high gloss finish smother the pores of the guitar and harden or deaden the sound a little bit?  I have always liked the 40 series because of the satin finish.  Bill (new forum member and long time Larrivee/Taylor player)

Personal guitars:
00-40 Mahogany back/rosewood top
000-40M
OM-40R
L-40R
Taylor 814ce
Taylor 524M
Fender Telecaster

I contacted Larrivee about one of these Hog L-40s back in September.

Me: Hi, are these ever going to be available without being a custom order?

Larrivee: Most Larrivée's are built to order. L-40 is a standard model. You can order one and expect it within three months.

I think L 40s are made, but JCL does not like the idea.  To him, the L has it’s own unique bracing, giving them their own unique sound.  An L with 40 bracing is not an L.

Well, an L is Jean’s unique guitar....not just SHAPE, but also SOUND.  Besides , we have not had a good war of words for awhile.
