I was wasting some time at Gryphon in Palo Alto today.  Found they had a really nice 1996 D10 with a cedar top and Joker inlay.  Has to be one of the
few cedar tops Jean has ever made as he is not a big fan of cedar as a top wood.  I could have been tempted if I didn't have my awesome Brazilian
D10 at home.

$1750.  It was pretty clean.  Lacking a little volume.  Not sure why someone would order a cedar dreadnaught.

I have three cedar tops, a dread, a concert, and an LS, all with totally different back/side woods. I find the cedar tops are mellow enough to not overcome the vocals, they blend very well...

Exactly.  I would describe the tone as mellow and rounded on the cedar D10.  And the Joker inlay was awesome.

In case anyone was interested in it, Gryphon is awesome to deal with.  I decided to return a very, very expensive guitar I bought from them online recently and they were beyond cool.  No issues, no pressure.  I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them online again.
Oh, and they pack better than anyone in the business.  I've never dealt with anyone who packs more thoroughly than I do but they take every precaution (just don't let them ship usps).

Peter, Paul and Mary have a cedar topped Larry in their arsenal.  Though they put a rubber band on the headstock covering the logo.

Does Gryphon actually sell anything that isn't "very, very expensive"?   :humour:

In all seriousness, it's a neat shop, and definitely a place that should be experienced.

Why would they do that?

Probably for the same reason Andy Griffith put electrical tape over the Martin logo on his tv guitar.

There is a 1974 Cedar topped D in my neighbourhood for sale. (Toronto build) it's a very sweet and lovely sounding guitar.

jean once (early seventies) swore by cedar for his tops, it has it's own characteristics, as do all the other woods on guitars :....
"Senior" member means "old" right?
Like over 50?

Too many guitars to list here.
Too few brain cells to be bothered with...

My guess is they like the guitar but don't like the fact the maker doesn't pay them to play it

This kinda intrigued me, and it has come up before.
I can't find a picture of the tape, but could of  the rubber band.
