My wife has wanted to play cello for years.  Finally was able to get one for her.  I may give it a go as well, but I'm not sure I can abide the 5th tuning spacing.

I love the sound as well but I'm not sure if I try playing it that I would be able to adjust to the intervals between strings

I too love the sound of a cello. If you decide to mark the intervals just do it on the side of the fretboard as tape across the fretboard can sometime sound out of tune.Oh ya you get use to it,went thru that when I started playing uprite bass.

I get to play along with a cellist each week.  It has been a joy for sure.

I also play bass.  Intervals are a 4th up, 5th down across strings for same fretboard position - that's what I'm talking about.  The cello is a 5th up, 4th down across the strings.  That's the part that I think would mess with my brain.

So, do cello players go thru the whole engleman spruce versus Italian spruce, hog vs rosewood, ebony vs rosewood, std bracing vs forward shifted controversies or have cellos become standardized more or less?

Are the strings nano-coated gut?

Apparently it's similar talk, from what I can tell.

I believe the latest is actually Wood vs. Carbon Fiber.

Oy-yoy-yoy

They have multiple other sets of superstitions to deal with.

Fortunately for cellists, violists, and bassists there are many more luthiers who will experiment with carvings, sizes, shapes, etc on their instruments than there are with violins. The whole Cult of Cremona is readily dispelled by people using their ears. Perhaps also the increased physicality of playing viola, cello, or bass makes people really pay attention to the sound they are getting out of an instrument in proportion to the money and labour they are putting in (not to mention the number of hours the instrument spends at a luthier's being babied)
