The Logical Song. Very catchy but stupid. Am I actually to infer that being logical or sensible are bad things?

Funny. I just heard that on radio.. I "get it" but a little too cute for me.
10-1614 more than a number, it's body and soul.

Ah, but the word they are most bemoaning is liberal ... i.e. If you are logical, they will call a radical, a liberal..... IOW, conservative are NOT logical.  Not cute, just leftist claptrap.

I think it's interesting that you picked out the word liberal as the word they are "most bemoaning".  Here are the full lyrics.

To paraphrase the opening line of verse 2, "Better watch what you say or they'll be calling it liberal claptrap".  I have the album and I like most of the other songs on it better than this one.  It's a catchy little tune that uses a lot of words with the same endings and that's about it.  The production on Supertramp songs was almost over the top but the music is pretty good regardless of whether you agree with the content of the lyrics.

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they'd be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world's asleep,
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world's asleep,
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man.
Won't you please, please tell me what we've learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

90% of country music since around 1980...  redneck claptrap, and not even well done.

Haven't thought of The Logical Song since college (used to have that album - Breakfast in America or something like that, right?).

One that I don't get is Aqualung by Jethro Tull. But then, I probably never really paid attention to the lyrics (like on a lot of other songs...).

Oh... and anything Bruce Cockburn sings in French. Cuz I don't speak French (although I am 50% French - on my dad's side)

Ah, Aqualung and Locomotive Breath.  Now that was when rock was rock.  Couple of dirty old men, sitting on a park bench watching the frilly panties run.  And killer guitars to boot.

So maybe it's just as well I wasn't paying attention... but you're right - that's rock 'n' roll!

I see it exactly the opposite. That being logical and sensible are bad things and, of course, it is the conservative's insistence on being logical and sensible AND SQUARE, that is the problem. In other words, being a magical, illogical person is preferable. Thus the immense popularity of claptrap like Harry Potter.

But, liberals see themselves as logical, middle of the road folks.

Steve, do you need to go there ?  Do we have to have politics inserted into the discussion ?

"Muskrat Love" - no explanation necessary
"Ventura Highway" - I'm from Louisiana, lived in Florida a long time - "alligator lizards in the air" is something to be avoided!
Remember when the music came from wooden boxes strung with silver wires...

We don't, but remember, I grew up in a time when 90% of what musicians did was extremely political.

Masters of war
Revolution
Sky pilot
Feel like I'm fixin to die rag
War
Ohio.    And on and on.  And do't get me started on the folk singers .....

So now I have come full circle.  I started this thread as a giggle about crappy songs, and now I will end with one that is as relevant today as it was fifty years ago

The eastern world it is exploding
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war but whats that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'

But you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you boy

And you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Yeah my blood's so mad feels like coagulating
I'm sitting here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

And you tell me
Over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The pounding of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace

And you tell me
Over and over and over and over again my friend
You don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction

That's almost okay but still ... I've heard of crying over spilt milk but  writing bombastic nonsense over wet cake ... takes the cake.
