I'd been watching a listing (many of you on the AGF saw) for one of Lance Mccollum's guitars built from the famous "The Tree" Mahogany. The seller kept dropping the price and I cracked. There are very few sets of this stuff left that aren't built already. Always wanted to try one out. The instrument has some issues I'll have to deal with, but I'm hoping it's pleasing tonally. Sure is pretty - ab inlays by Harv Leach too.....if it knocks me out, maybe someday I'll have it refinished.

That is beyond really nice fitness,
I love quilted wood grain, especially mahogany and maple.  I also think that the quilted and flamed grained woods effect the tonality of a guitar.  I have no way of proving it except subjectively.  I have a wildly quilted mahogany guitar now that is tonally to die for.  And I am getting John McQuarrie to build me a QMR80-00-12 with a 5A grade quilted maple back and sides and cedar top that I am really looking forward too.

I had a Cedar/Maple Webber OM cutaway many years ago that had some of the most incredible 3D quilted maple I've ever seen - that was a great little guitar too!  Hope the N-wood works out great for you!

I see another Lance McCollum guitar on reveb that is stellar, another of my favorite tone woods, walnut.

Showed up on Tuesday - couple of surprises....

First, a good one - it was listed as 1 3/4 nut and it's actually 1 13/16!! (My fave! :thumb)  
Second - not as good......listed as spruce and showed up cedar (not my fave)

Cleaner than I expected cosmetically - sounds really nice for sure.    I've buffed out the body twice, tweaked the setup (new bone saddle)

The wood is pretty 3D in person!

Hey fitness,
Super great guitar.  I expect the quilted mahogany (density) will offset the cedar top's influence on the sound.  That being said, switching to 80-20 bronze strings can brighten up the cedar top considerably.  Personally I love cedar.  To me it would be a double bonus.

The mid and upper mid clarity is the problem I have with Cedar - especially after the strings get past played in (I'm very picky and don't let them go too far - maybe 20-25 hours tops)   I use EJ16's to brighten up darker guitars, but pretty much across the board cedar topped instruments have that same quality to my ear.

I think the fret work (reseat/reglue/dress/level) will help with tone transfer and give it a little more clarity too.

I'm not questioning especially since I've only seen a few Cedar topped guitars. But I thought Cedar was darker or more red. But that's a lighter color. I guess you tell it's Cedar by grain? Thanks.
