Hi,

I was wondering if the Gotoh mid-size 510 tuners are a drop in replacement for the Faradyne tuners that Larrivee is shipping on  their new L-09's.  Can anyone please shed some light on this?

Thanks,
Dave

The Larrivee branded tuners with standard offset screw hole can be directly replaced with Gotoh SGL510 (18:1) and SGL510Z (21:1 tuning ratio) series tuning machines, they just drop right in...

Thank you George.  Other than the obvious, is there any real benefit to going with 21:1 vs 18:1?  Are they higher quality or just fewer turns to get to pitch?

The 21:1 tuners are more turns, not less.  Hence, they are more precise.

James Goodall uses 18:1 on his guitars which are $7K and up, so I would imagine those would be fine for my L-09.

I put in Gotoh 510 Contours (21:1) in my D-05. Just dropped right in. I love both the looks of them and how they work. More turns is only an issue, if  you can call it that, when changing strings or changing tunings. They are very precise once the strings are tuned to pitch.

Where did you buy them if you don't mind me asking.  I've only seen the 18:1 on Stew Mac.

lmii.com (Luthiers Mercantile)  and allparts.com  (All Parts) both carry them...  Others too, but these are the 2 places that immediately come to mind.

japarts.ca is a distributor and sells on ebay too.  Josh Gemmell is my contact in Canada, he is in partnership with another man in Japan.

Much more precise tuning, I have put them on all my Larrivee's with offset tuning machines.  I much prefer the 21:1 ratio over any other.  BTW, other custom builders use them on their more expensive guitars as well...

Thanks very much to everyone for the helpful replies and information.  I am going to order the 21:1 ratio tuners.  Now I just need to choose between chrome and chrome with black buttons.  If the buttons weren't plastic, I would probably lean in the direction of black buttons.  I don't want all black tuners, otherwise I would have bought cosmo black, which is pretty cool.

Any pics of your headstocks with different options would be greatly appreciated.   bigrin

I'm not much of a gold hardware guys and I did not see ivoroid buttons as an option.  I will take another look, but they will definitely be chrome.  If it were an L10 then maybe gold., but I don't want the bling on this guitar.  It's going to be a workhorse guitar for me.

The chrome ones are very nice.

What is wrong with the Faradyne tuners Larrivee uses now?  I know there is a lot of dislike for the Pings they used to use although I've never experienced any problems myself.  I thought the Faradynes were supposed to be superior to the Gotohs.

I have wanted to put some 21:1 Gotoh's on my parlor for a while, to replace the existing Pings.  The fact that the Pings are still working flawlessly keeps me from going for it.

The parlor would take mini's?  I do not believe Gotoh is making a 22:1 ratio in a mini....
