Will Open E Tuning Cause Too Much Stress?

Hi,

I like playing many tunes in open E. Will this cause too much stress on my SD-60's neck? I am strung up with light gauge strings. I know I can tune down to open D and use a capo but I prefer the sound of open E.

All opinions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

As long as you keep an eye on the neck and bridge.using lights should be ok.

I tune to D and capo for open E.  Good compromise if you worry that tuning strings upward puts too much stress on the guitar.

D'Addario has a nice string calculator - http://stringtensionpro.com/

Looks like your open E tuning has a total 179.53 lbs of tension which is less than a set of mediums tuned normally at 185.27 lbs.  :thumbsup

These tension calculator programs are great for figuring out custom sets.  If you use alternate turnings or scale lengths, they let you zero in on the feel you are looking for.

That string calculator is awesome! Thanks.
