So here's the deal: If you buy my good-looking, very nicely-finished Larrivee L03 guitar, then for only $1000 more, I'll paint it black.  Well, that's not really true, but I will paint most of it black.  (If you offer me $1500, and ask real nice, I'll paint it all black.)

This seems like a thinly veiled jab at sunburst finished guitars.   Do  you know what goes into the production of a beautifully done total sunburst on a Larrivee Guitar ?    I gladly paid the extra money for the total sunburst on a custom L-05.    If you prefer your guitars to be satin finish with no sunburst that's fine.  I like my OM-03R, D-040R and LS-03MT un-painted, satin finished Larrivees too.  But the sunburst on my L-05 is spectacular.  Ask Ducktrapper how he likes his 000 burst.

My sunburst........................

Satin finish
That's what I thought of when I looked at the L-03 TSB. A Larrivee with TSB was what first attracted me to the brand. JCL has done some very nice sunbursts. I know others do them now as well but like Tuffy I think they are worth the extra Benjamins, if you have them to spare.
The only TSB I own presently is a Recording King 000 satin, but it is up on the wall and still catches my attention.
My old Larrivee parlor, the "O project" also is a head turner with that stained top and gloss finish. Someday I'd like to give a TSB paint job to one of my rebuild/refinish projects. Maybe next winter.

I'm not sure about today but the time mine was made, JCL still personally did all the bursts. Ask me about it? Perfect!  bowdown

Nice looking guitar that will make someone very happy. If Jean Larrivee doesn't do all sunburst personally anymore, I'll bet the person that does them was trained by him. In any case, this is definitely a head turner.

First off, it may list at $1,000 more than a non-sunburst L-03 but the discounted price from most dealers reduces that cost significantly.

Second, over time it will be harder to find another one like this and for those who like a sunburst finish, many will most likely be willing to pay more if someone wants to sell one.

I have five nice guitars (based on my eye and ear) including two Larrivees and everyone of them is a little different from a stock model. None of them are for sale but I have been offered three times what I paid for my sunburst dread.

I bought a used TSB OM and other than it being a 12-fretter I'm not sure I would have looked twice if it had been the usual finish. I already have three natural Larrivees and love all of them but the sunburst one, WOOHOO!

I have one killer TSB top on an RS4 and an even better all around Iced Tea Sunburst on another Larrivee.  I have never seen any better... but what do I know...

After being absent from this forum for a while, it is good to see the all-prevalent passion of the "old-timers" here, kinda makes me feel at home yet again (that total bursty feeling - pun intended) - good on ya Tom, Lynn, Rob, Danny, BroKen. Your allegiance to the brand is commendable. Hopefully I'll have a Larry again soon (the brand is back in South Africa  ), and hopefully it will be a JCL burst...

By my rough calculation you can currently expect to pay $600.00 to $700.00 more for a new L-03 complete TSB over the standard L-03 at a retailer in Canada.  Seems like a lot, but how many extra man-hours of dedicated craftsmanship would a "paint" job like this require?  We're talking top, back, and sides having the burst applied to.  This isn't accomplished within just a couple of extra hours, or is it?  6 hours @ $100.00 per hour?  10 hours @ $60.00 per hour?  Just wondering.

Sorry about the veil.

Right. Thinking well of or owning a well done burst is tantamount to a bad fashion statement. First rule of holes. When you find yourself in one ... stop digging.

I still have a Simon & Patrick Woodland Pro Sunburst Parlor HG, although it's for sale. Godin/Simon & Patrick did a very nice '50s Gibson J-45-like sunburst on the top. It's a nice fade from very dark to a nice honey hue. It's going to be hard to part with that guitar, as it sounds pretty amazing especially in the higher registers. The nicely done 'burst gives the guitar an old-timey feel, and I like it.

Here's a good review of the model from Premier Guitar from a few years back:

Review Demo - Simon & Patrick Woodland Pro Parlor Sunburst HG

As for Larrivees, if I were going to go for a different color, then I'd get an all-mahogany or or all-walnut model. I think the wood Larrivee uses is so nice is should not be covered up.

My three S&P Woodland Pro's are for sale, but I may keep the sunburst parlor model as it's much nicer than most anyone would think it should be. I also like to have a sunburst guitar around when playing blues. I think they did a nice job with this one. But Larrivee has such outstanding wood tops, back and sides I see no point in covering their models up with paint. I'd go for a 'hog or walnut top for color variation with Larrivee. The grain on top showing through on the S&P parlor is quite nice, darker but still good on the solid 'hog back and sides but no signs of flaws in the wood. Godin uses some nice sitka spruce for its tops, the mahogany back and sides are of high quality. The Folk is an excellent mid-sized guitar, and the Mini Jumbo has a nice full sound when strummed.
