Can this pickup combo work without having to do anything extra externally?

It would probably depend on what kind of amp you are plugging into. Most acoustic amps do not require a external preamp.

It will work but unless its wired in stereo you will not have control over each pu's volumn. If wired in stereo you would need a stereo plug into the guitar and a "Y" at the other end to use 2 chanels in the PA a pre-amp would help both pu's  sound better.

I'm not much of an "amplified" geek (none, in fact, except for a few times that I've needed some amplification). Last summer I had the necessity of using my M1 passive with a portable PA system that had a mixer and two speakers. I used my M1 with the phantom power on the board and it seemed to work well. If anyone can enlighten us as to why this WOULDN'T work, I'm all ears.

Ok sorry I know these are novice questions and thanks for your replies. Sounds complicated. I think I'd rather have the M1 over the Element but the element is side mounted so I guess I'll just stick with it.

Two very different pick ups, I concur with Rob on this.
But being a huge fan of the Element, I'd be happy to take it off your hands....
