It's no use talking about who "the best" is.  That's all subjective and based on personal preference, but the older I get the more I just appreciate fine musicianship and not just flashy playing.

An example of this is Marty Stuart and his band.  I've been watching his show for a couple years and am constantly impressed by how these fellows put on a show, and particularly how Marty plays guitar (and mandolin).  He always plays for the song, looks as if he's having fun, doesn't ever seem like he has anything to prove, and acts like he genuinely cares about the audience and putting on a great show.  That is musicianship and fine showmanship.

Who are some of your favorites?  And more importantly, why?

Gone but still loved.... Chet Adkins... great and yet humble....

Roy Clark...  a fine guitarist and great performer......   BobW...  :guitar

I also enjoy Stuart and the band and the show.Right now my brain is a fog from a smack on the top of my head so I'll get back to this latter.

+1 on Roy Clark and Chet. Tommy Emmanuel is a favorite of mine. Django is also a big favorite. So many great ones past and present.

Any suggestions for a good sample that's available online?

Here is a good sampling of Marty's band.  Great tele twang on display here!

Some of my favorites:    Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Chet Atkins, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Peter Greene on the electric side of things.
And Doc Watson, Neil Young, Nick Drake, and Django, and Fahey on acoustics
Rhythm guitar:    Keith Richards
Slide Guitar:  Ry Cooder, Roy Rogers, Derek Trucks, Duane Allman

These things are so darn subjective.    It's hard to pick a favorite or a "best" in any category

Terry Kath from the band Chicago,
I know hes more of an electric player but
he was a master of chords and taste.
He did some killer acoustic work as well, check out a song called Byblos
on youtube if you can.
Dave

A couple more excellent acoustic fingerstyle players: Doyle Dykes and El McMeen.

Dykes can be pretty flashy, but not in the same way as Tommy Emmanuel - who I also really like, but sometimes his energy level is over the top for me. But yes, a great player.

El McMeen just does some nice fingerstyle compositions - most if not all in an alternate tuning that I can't recall at the moment; C G C G C E or something like that.

Take tuffythepug's list,  :+1:
add ducktrapper's list :thumb
sprinkle in:
David Gilmour
Johnny Winter
Leo Kottke
SRV
Muriel Anderson
Ed Gerhard
Frank Vignola

Ten more. Tony Rice. Jimmy Page. Joe Walsh. Lenny Breau. Tommy Tedesco. Glenn Campbell. Joe South. James Burton. Les Paul. Jerry Reed.

This is a great list of guitar players and absolutely contains the majority of my all time favorites.  The one group that seems to be missing are some of the instrumental greats such as Tony Mottola, Wes Montgomery and George Benson, among others...
George
