I was wondering if anyone was going to bring up jazz artists. I watched a concert last night (Montreal International Jazz Festival 2004) with the incredible Oscar Peterson along with his long time drummer and a couple of Swedes including Ulf Walenius on guitar. He was playing some disreputable looking, grungy Les Paul copy with string ends waving about and more dirt than you'd find under a farmer's fingernails but man could he and they ever play!
Anyway, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Charlie Christian, Benny Goodman, Miles Davis, Lenny Breau, Pat Metheny and the list goes on.

This must be the Ulf Walenius guitar you refer to.  Yeah, it's pretty funky

Ah! Make that Wakenius  then but, yes, that's it. It looks like it needs a bath. It was especially noticeable with everyone in tuxes.

I don't know why but I'm sort of offended by string ends flopping around. It looks horrible to me and besides someone could lose an eye. If you're not going to trim them and, for the life of me, I don't know why you wouldn't at least spool them for crying out loud.

Gordon Lightfoot but after the original post I have to say that Jackson Browne has caught my eye and ear. Here is a great song with David Lindley backing him up at the Philadelphia Folk Festival a few years back.

David Lindley is amazing, no matter what instrument he is playing. And he is my favorite to hear plying wth J.B.
