LRB iMix replacement: LRB SP Anthem or ... ?

Hi there!

I am the proud owner of an L-05E (LRB iMix onboard). I have a problem with my LRB system (preamp moving part buzz and iBeam problem).
I discussed these issues with a guy from LRB, he helped me identifying the problems, and as the preamp is discontinued, he extended a good discount on a StagePro Anthem.
I have to make a choice!

The only thing I know is that I'll get rid of my current system.
The LRB SP Anthem would exactly fit the hole in the side of my guitar. If I choose another system, it may not be the case.
Would it affect the sound of my guitar if I don't fill this hole? (for example if I choose a passive system or choose an external preamp).

Should I consider other systems?

Thank you in advance for your help! :thumbsup

All I can tell you is I have installed 3 Anthem SL systems with out the side mount {barn door} style and eeveryone of my clients are very happy. They all use the off board PARA pre amps with them.If you have a tech and want to go a different route maybe they can build a cover for the side hole.I'm not sure if K+K has something that use an onboard pre amp that will mount in the same spot.

Thank you for your reply.
I wish I didn't choose an onboard system when I bought my guitar.
But now I have to cope with the side hole. What else can I do but fill it?
Because of my preamp buzz (due to moving parts), I am quite afraid of having another onboard preamp.
Whatever system I choose, I wil have it installed by a luthier.

You could have the hole turned into a sound port.

I've never thought of having a soundport on my guitar, but why not?
However, the hole was not designed for this kind of use. And don't know if it has the characteristics of a good soundport...

I've turned an 01 and a couple 03's openings into sound ports with good results.I also built a nice insert for one.If you have a good tech with some wood working skills or know someone a nice design can be built and place inside the opening.

That's interesting!
I guess that if I want to turn it to a soundhole, it will need some "make up", cause when
I remove the preamp, it doed not look very good...
I will try to play without the preamp and see if a soundport would do me fine...
Do you have any picture of the insert?

Anyway, I need a pickup system to replace my iMix.
I have an offer for a LRB SP Anthem for 240$ including shipping to France.
The luthier would take around 80$ to install it.
Could I find anything better than an LRB SP Anthem for 240$ + 80$?

The only pix I have are on a frozen up old computer which is next in line to have my photo's and music removed before being cleaned and donated. As for the Anthem SL the price is far including the shipping and the price seems fair for the install though its a fairly easy do it yourself install. But as I always say if a job falls into I'm not comfy doing this always bring it to your favorite tech, this way if anything goes wrong you can blame them.

Hi!

Is a barn door system supposed to be more expensive than a no cut?
I have not tried using the hole as a soundport yet.
Is an LRB SP Anthem the best way to make my L-05E sound natural?
I play say 75% fingerpicking, 25% strumming, 200% open tuning.
Should I consider any other system? (not only LRB)
Thanks

Not really, yes there is an upcharge on guitars with pu systems.Having a no cut just means that the pu system does not have a control board mounted on the side of the guitar. As for the Anthem SP the system is designed with an under the saddle pu for low end freq. and the mic picks up the rest in a 80/20 blend with most of the work being done by the internal mic.It can handle any style of playing you can throw at it with a bit more natural sound {As close as your going to get to mic'ing it}.The K+K pu is pretty nice I have installed the Mini in a number of guitars with very happy results.
