What is your favorite set up :? Why :?

Much talk and thought going into pickup up choice for the Forum V but would like to hear everyones thoughts on this.

I know some like HB's only and others P90's and mini's are less common but very worthy of consideration

Given a choice would you mix and match them say a HB & a P90 :? Or a P90 and a Mini :? ala Neil YOUNG

Or a favourite of mine since 80's a HB and a Mini. I am not familiar with a famous artist who has a Full HB with a Mini they seem to get along fine in the middle more gain in the middle than 2 Full HB's and I am not sure why. Anyone familiar with someone setup this way.

I think Gibson is finely coming out with this configuration SG AMS 24 Not sure what took them so long.

Or 2 Minis like Gary MOORE used with Thin Lizzy in his LP Deluxe - how can you not luv that tho you see a fair amount on Ebay routed out - yikes!!!!!

Realize a lot of this is personal and subjective and may depend on what someone already has thus maybe you would lust for something different. Many options, any thoughts on this ramble :?

Hey!

My fav setup has been texas specials on my strats and JB/Jazz on my carved tops and 7 strings.  However, since I got me new RS4, the JB/Jazz set doesn't even hold a candle to the Larrivee pup tone.  So now these are my favorites :D

RE: the minis:  I've never used a Mini HB (I was even confused what exactly was meant by 'Mini'!) like this but have been on the SD site doing tone comparisons between the fullsize and their minis and I was a skeptic at first but I am seriously considering one for the neck position of my Forum V with a fullsize in bridge.  It seems clearer and brighter to me, which I would LOVE if this is how ML's ended up sounding.  It would work out perfectly in the neck IMO.  I usually have to turn down tone on bridge HB and max out the neck so this would help balance em out a little.  It may be that they are just less output that is causing this but I do like the neck posn samples I've heard on the SD site sofar!  Has anyone heard how 'hot' ML's are going to be in comparison to the bridge RS4 pup?  The other benefit is more of the top would show!

I'm not considering P90 for this since I play med-high gain (relatively) and noise is a non-negligible concern for me.  If I did P90's it'd be on a separate guitar (maybe that'll be my first RS2 ?!) and probably start looking into the noiseless P90s out there (like the Kinmans).

I'll start with what I'm using now.Since I don't like strat btyle guitars my 3 pu tele from the 80's has 2 tele bridge pu's in the bridge and middle and a standard tele style neck pu.There all EMG SA's and produce a clean slightley compressed sound. My other tele is set up with a Fralin SP in the bridge which is a P90 and the neck pu is a dog eared Kent Armstrong {like the pu on an Epiphone Casino}.My neck tele will standard tele pu's.At some point I'd like to get a LP style guitar {maybe even an RS4} with just a simple wrap-a-round bridge with P90's and a second one with mini humbuckers. The mini's always had a better tonal responce and didn't get muddy in the mids when drivin hard like full size humbuckers. For archtops both full size and semi solids I prefer P90's for there roundness of tone.

I have been doing some research on this since i am interested in doing a mini/full HB combo myself.  The general consensus has been that this is a pretty nice combo since it allows the full girthy HB sound on the bridge, but also gives some added versatility and brightness with the mini on the neck.  This is sounding like a tempting combo to me.

I've really been enjoying the P-90s, and, ironically, the only time I really have problems with the noise is at home (because I'm usually sitting so close to my amps). They just have a lot of snap and tonal variety along the range of the volume and tone controls.

The Larry humbuckers are great, too, but they're not quite as clear and snappy as the P-90s. This is why I'm so interested in the upcoming mini-humbuckers - if they have more clarity and snap without the noise, that would be ideal.

As for me, I'm a more-is-more kinda guy.  I'd love to have a full-sized humbucker in the bridge and a mini in the neck and the middle with a 5-way switch.  Now that would be pretty dang bueno.

That's why this guitar is sometimes so much fun:

Annnnnnyway...

As much as I like my Strats (and I do like my Strats) I like RS-4's BETTER!  The thought of a 3 pickup option (and Matt LarrivĂ©e pickups at that!!) with that great ergonomic body and the best neck on any guitar.  Oh, oh yeah.  How about it Matt?  Could we get that offered as an option?  I, for one, would pay the upcharge.

That would be pretty cool to see a 3 pup RS4 although technically anyone could have it done.  I'd def be out of that boat since I never use the middle pickup on any of my guitars ... well, except the 2 and 4 posns on my strats.  3 fullsize HBs is how you tell a greedy guitar :D

wilblee,

Very cool Strats! That last one with the SD pups (can't remember what they're called at the moment) is intriguing - how do you have that one wired? Don't see any extra switches...

Love the LSR roller nuts on the top two - I wish they'd make those in lefty! I'd give - well give my current nuts  - for a couple of those in lefty!  :whistling:

P.S. You've got some nice amps there, too!

Thanks Mikeymac,

Those are SD P-Rails.  In that Strat the middle tone control has been replaced by a six way rotary switch.  If you think of the most clockwise position as position 1, it works as follows:

1. HHH
2. SSS
3. PPP
4. HSS (Humbucker bridge with single coil middle and neck)
5. HPP
6. PSS

No, no, not greedy - versatile!  The black Strat, for instance has a TV Jones Powertron in the neck position, a Powertron bridge in the middle and a Powertron Plus in the bridge.  I kept the S1 switching scheme that the guitar came with, but replaced the pots with 500K pots and the capacitor with a PIO .022 uf.  Let me tell ya, I can cover a lot of ground with that guitar.  Same with the other two.

I'm also a big fan of the SD P-Rails, I have them in several guitars including this G&L ASAT Deluxe.

Hey, Southpawguy,

How 'bout you loan me that G&L for awhile so I can check out those P-Rails and that switching system (not to mention such a cool ASAT guitar!)?

I'll pay the shipping both ways...  :bgrin:
