You have to have a minimum of ten posts to use the personal message feature.
Put up a few more posts and try again

All newbies should read the forum FAQs and rules.

Should somehow be required reading before being enabled to post. Surely in this tecnological age the registrant could be led thru in the initial sign up

Yeah, just like when you have to read the terms before checking the box for software and such or making an electronic payment to AMEX. I always read the terms  not.

The registration agreement is completely editable in SMF 1.1.13.

But I can see the value in having it separate like it is here. Registration agreements are typically inaccessible after registration and in the haste of sign-up, most users don't even read them, rather they just check the "agree" box and complete the registration.

You'd think before even joining a forum, prospective members would want to read the rules to learn about the forum and see what is expected of them by membership. About that, a few years ago I stumbled into an airline pilots forum through Google - having once worked for Boeing I was curious and did some reading in the public forum ... they regularly had non-pilots join just to hassle the pilots when the rules *clearly stated* membership was open to certified commercial pilots only ... says a lot about their character.

I have to wonder about the people who say they have been lurking for a while and this is their first post. How could you lurk for any amount of time and not run across a thread that mentions the rules or at least the donuts.
