Usually sound hole pickups are for metallic strings - which the uke aint got.
K & K Sound makes a "big spot" soundboard transducer that works nicely.

Yep.  It is one of those instruments that will probably sound better with a mic if that's at all possible.  If it's in a loud-ish combo, a mic probably won't work.  But, without metal strings, a soundhole pickup (which is a wound coil like on an electric) won't work.

If it is a loud environment, an under saddle pickup may be better - there are a bunch.

A combo of under saddle and contact pickups can yield an incredible larger than life sound. I supported James Hill and was completely blown away by the wide dynamic and frequency range of his instruments.

Good topic Steve! I'm playing a lot of ukulele lately, after acquiring a fantastic Larrivée all mahogany uke. I'd be interested in amplifying it, as well. I've only known very cheap ukes before this. Who knew they were so incredible? Other than George Harrison and Walkerman, that is.
