BTW, before I stumbled into this forum back in Sept 2008, I've been GAS-ing for a Taylor 615ce.

Danny my friend you are full of surprises.   I came very close to buying a lefty Taylor 614 with full sunburst right before I got my first Larrivee.    The maple on these can be incredible.   What will you come up with next ?

This makes me chuckle Danny...i thought you couldn't play bigger guitars! I've had jumbo gas for a while too...and got a J-185 earlier this year. Big change from the smaller Larrivees...

That one sure looks pretty...years ago I was smitten by Taylor's maple guitars and that's the experience that eventually caused me to enter the world of finer flat tops. Never did buy a Taylor but played a 615 at Fat Sound a week ago and it was a mighty fine guitar with a unique voice. Congrats on your new friend...its a beauty.

Now I gotta find the J-200 conversations you mentioned....that's where my gas is currently point

Big leaf is a species of maple from the northwest. It can have a lot of figuring or be plain. if it has a lot of figuring it is often called quilted or flamed depending on the pattern...

    I know I have spoke often of my shoulder troubles. I also have wanted a Southern Jumbo since way back. This is a Taylor version obviously. And it came to me as a surprise from a friend.

     He wanted the OM-21 back that he sold me over about two years ago I think and was willing to trade me this one. I am also doing some work on his car A/C and repairing a nice mando he has. As well as putting open back sta tites on the OM-21.

    As far as playing it I played for an hour two nites ago and the tight waist allows it to sit low and I shift my arm forward a little. My fingers wind up in the center of the sound hole and it seems to work fine.

                 Gotta take a walk with the little lady, more later. (pics too)

yes, I also find a small jumbo more comfortable to play than a dread due to the tighter waist.

With so much research being done to find substitutes for tonewoods in guitars I imagine that it is only a matter of time before something is discovered. I don't know that man will ever be capable of manufacturing (synthetic) anything prettier than the wood in good guitars. Gorgeous instrument there!!!

  Here are a few more pics from last year, in one you can see my old BMW 1973 2002 and in the other my 00-09FM on the wall.

  I still need to take some decent current pics. I spent several hours cleaning it and putting new EJ-17's on.
I lowered the saddle a bit as well. The tusq will go in time. Bone nut and saddle, polished nice and shiny.

 This is a huge Cypress tree on Cypress creek in Comfort, Texas.



We're staying a few days in one of the cottages in the background. Very relaxing place to be.

I do like the fret markers and abalone rosette. Sorry my pics are not any better.


The Grover tuners are so smooth and easy to dial in.


If you look close you see a line that is the neck block mahogany showing on the outside.

Very nice Danny. A classy looking instrument to be sure! How does it sound? I must admit I was disappointed to hear you traded the OM-21, but you've traded into a beautiful, and unique instrument, so I guess I'll let you off the hook for that one!

Thanks Scott, I don't think any less of the OM-21, this was just an opportunity to acquire a guitar I've always wanted. I don't know how long I'll be able to play it, but until I can't, I think I will.

                        This it a quote from the Taylor website about the 615ce.
