Should have done this long ago.

Last week I bought a new laptop and a wifi DSL router. So now I can compute while propped up on a stack of pillows in the bedroom.

What drove the new laptop buy was the desire to have portable computing to carry on my motorcycle when taking long trips, as many rest stops and eating establishments now have wifi.

Also have been experimenting with Voice over IP and decided to get rid of my cell phone with its big monthly service charge.

I looked at handhelds of various types, including Android phones, but decided a laptop with near-full size keyboard and 16 inch screen was more to my liking.

For emergency use bought a cheap $20 pay-as-you-go cell phone.

Laptop = Compaq Presario CQ62 with 3gb memory, 160gb disk, Win 7, AMD V120 64 bit chip set from Best Buy for $329 which is about what the netbooks sell for.

It is nice to have wifi and a laptop on trips. I have two laptops and bought my wife one as well. We paid 300 and 350 (price went up when I went back for the second one) These two new ones are emachines that have everything we need built into them and they are very fast as well as a huge hard drive.
I still have my Dell laptop as well, but this emachine is so much faster I don't use it much anymore.

It is nice to be able to sit at the kitchen table or take the laptop out on the porch, workshop or whatever.
And since we do travel a lot it makes it easier to get the information about a motel or weather etc.

When flying I have my two carry ons, my F-IV and my laptop case, stuffed with snacks and other stuff as well.
