Yep - for those that didn't know, it is cold here - well for us any way....
This shot is by a reader from a local news-site taken at a place called De Doorns in the Western Cape Province.

Hey Zohn, its winter in Oz too mate, how does that work if your on the opposite side of the world? Is it a south of the equator thing? No.... Or am i just simple minded.....

We're in a bit of a cold snap too, but no snow...yet. Looks funny seeing snow in South Africa, i picture it being dry golden plains with Lions roaming about.....funny how people have pre-conceived ideas of how a distant land would look. Theres no Kangaroos roaming the streets of our Capital cities in case you're wondering.  :arrow

Cheers, Scott.

Reminds me of the old classic surfing movie...The Endless Summer...when it was winter in California, the guys went surfing in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.  If you've never seen it, it is a great watch.  You'll get a kick out of the 60's bathing suits.

Scott..is it true that you don't tip in Australia?  As in tipping waitresses, bellhops etc?

Well there is an international event in Jeffreys bay in the Eastern Cape at the moment - US's Kelly Slater is ahead, with SA's Jordie Smith close behind.

Oh yeah, SA is one big desert plane mate, and we lock the lions in the streets up at night to protect the foreigners. Can you organise us some Koala's and Ru's to feed them?  :winkin:

Serious though, I heard on the news this morning there were some reports of snow again last night over the Drakensberg - we can certainly feel it here in Pretoria - brrrr...

Generally, no, we dont tip. In high roller environments it probably happens more (expensive hotels, casinos etc) but Im no high roller!
Its general accepted that the waiting staff, bellhops etc are employed to provide a service to the paying customer, and  they are paid by their employer. I work hard for my wage, paid by my employer. I dont get tips. We dont tip mechanics for servicing our cars. So we dont tip waiting staff for bringing our food.

Nice picture.  There's much to like about winter. The stunning beauty of freshly fallen snow, heavy sweaters, wool socks, flannel lined jeans, snow crunching under your feet, clean crisp air . . . enjoy!

:yak:

If you guys could keep it down there I'd appreciate it.

I have to add though that I have only seen and felt snow once in South Africa. It mostly snows on the mountains in the Natal and Cape (Western) provinces. Where I stay it happens very seldom...
We do get frost just about every night, but during the day the temp goes up to 15 - 20 deg Centigrade.

Hey Scott
I guess it is the "Southern-thing" mate. That explains why we have the rugby season now and cricket over Christmas...
