Has anyone played with a Dean Markley Trilogy West Coast pickup? I haven't yet, but the sound of 3 pickups in 1 sure sounds inviting. If you have used one, can you tell me the comparison to the sound of a Rare Earth Fishman or a LR Baggs M1? Also I wonder if Dean Markley is Chinese made?

Hey Fongie,

Mate, firstly Ive gotta say, Welcome to the quest for the ultimate acoustic pickup! This one will haunt ya forever...its completely done my head in a few times.

Heres my take on it:

No pickup sounds like what you hear when you play an acoustic guitar unplugged.

Thats it!
Each has its own pluses and minuses. Some come close in tone, but have feedback issues or are excessively bassy, or others are feedback resistant but just dont quiet catch the sound. Mics are finicky and expensive.

Also, what are you running it in to? Straight to the PA? Preamp? Acoustic amp? How loud are you playing? Other instruments to compete with? Lots of variables.

After much searching and pickup swapping I ended up with the old tried and proven under saddle piezo. Ive got an L.R, Baggs Element in the Martin. Its feed back resistant, has a very good acoustic tone to it (there are better of course) it cuts through in a multi instrument situation, its simple, and didnt cost the earth.

Pound for pound, its the best all rounder Ive come across. The Fishman Matrix is similar, I had one of those in my OM-03R.

As for the Dean Markley stuff? I found it inferior to the Fishman and Baggs gear. Stick with the biggies. They know what they're doing.

Of course this is just my opinion, and I actually enjoyed swapping pickup systems in and out, comparing tones etc. Others will have there preferences Im sure, but in the end I just went with the all rounder.

Cheers, Scott.

Thanks mate. Lately I've been buying different pick-ups, as I've mentioned in my other threads I've already purchased a Fishman Rare Earth, LR Baggs M1 and a EMG and just looking for another. I love the Fishman and the Baggs but the EMG just doesn't do it for me, so I've decided to sell and find another. I think another Fishman is the one on the cards, thanks anyway mate. Yes your right, the bigger names are definitely better, I was just interested in this Dean Markley because it has 3 diff. pickups in one. Cheers
Hows the family? Hello to all
cheers
