A couple of years back I went to an outdoor concert by, of all people, Jimmy Buffett, and he closed out the show with "Southern Cross."  It's not too often you'll see a performer wind up a show with another artist's song, but he did a great job of it.  It took a few seconds for the lights to come in my head, and all of a sudden it's "hey, that's a Stills song".

A nice way to end the evening...

Sorry folks but you're all wrong. I have to believe that "the best song in the world", like the unified theory of everything, has yet to be written. I'll get it right yet though!  :whistling:

Who said The Macarena?

OM-03R 2008 Twelfth Fret SE 5/12
LSV-03R 2009 Forum III 55/78

Nope.
I listened to it again a couple of days ago on great headphones at a moderate volume and I was correct the first time.
The best song in the (popular music) world is indeed the commercial release of "Layla".

We may can now close this thread. ;-)

The responses so far have been all over the map which reflects the eclectic tastes of our little forum.  All the songs named (except for the Macarena  :laughin:) have a lot of merit and have withstood the test of time.   How can I overlook the song writing heroes of my generation which would include Dylan, John Prine, the Beatles, etc. ?
I've given it quite a bit of thought since the thread was started and I've ended up with a choice that surprised me ....

Whippin' Post by the Allman  Brothers is a song I've always thought was damn near perfect for emotional lyrics, driving bass  lines, memorable guitar riffs, unique tempo changes and the feeling it puts across.     So, since a lot of good songs have been named already I'll throw that one into the mix.

All Along the Watchtower- the Hendrix version

Indeed this is a real contender.
May I suggest, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"?

On the subject of Hendrix, I can't look past Little Wing as a song that has everything, Jimi, Noel and Mitch were all awesome on that track - it wasn't just about the guitar.  It's in my top 3 5 10 20 ........ lets face it, there are a lot of good songs out there.

My daughter agrees with you.  I have an exclusive live version of this track on my iphone from my recent family holiday where the artist himself was performing an rare UK show.  I'm guessing I should just leave it where it is, however.

Mark,
"In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" from the "Live at the Filmore" album is one of the greatest numbers ever.
To return to a Hendrix reference, its not a "song" per se, but the best Guitar solo ever IMHO, is the Iinstrumental Solo at the end of the "Woodstock" album, following, The Star Spangled Banner>Purple Haze. It you have the album, give it a listen, or you could find it with video on Youtube.
