I got new Gotohs for Christmas so the subject of why I want to replace the tuners has come up. The Pings (I am assuming they are Pings) have an unstable feel to them with the springs that are in them 1st of all and after only about a year and a half I do have some post wobble that really drives me nuts. Between the 2 it makes my L05-12 seem very low end when I change strings. They do seem to hold fairly well, I'm not tweaking them all the time but when I do I am always curious as to why the springs, does anyone know???

I believe they are there to put tension on the gears, so they don't feel so sloppy.

Thanks for the explanation, seems silly to me but I guess it makes sense as to not break the button. No matter they'll be replaced next week but I've always wondered why they would do that on the 12's. I haven't seen the springs on any others but I really have been out of the market for a year or so now. The Pings really do feel cheap though, I am looking forward to the Gotohs.

Springs are in all the Pings I've checked - doesn't matter how many strings on the guitar - same tuners, different quantity.

I am looking forward to the Gotohs.

I have two Larivees with Pings and two that are old enough to have Gotohs.  The Gotohs are much nicer, more solid.  You will like the Gotohs.

Gotoh are superior tuners. Period. I would assume (just my guess) that they are more expensive than Ping and with today aim on cutting costs we see a switch...
