May I make a suggestion here without offending anyone? Probably not eh?

Anyway, could we "change the channel" from "The tuner network 24 hour update" now.

Okay ... I will. Let's talk pickups ... again.

Is anyone getting a K&K put in their FIV? Jim has a few on hand, and I'm trying to decide if I really need a pickup in this guitar...I'm leaning toward the K&K Trinity Western - does that have the preamp?

Karma?

Some of us prefer to think of it as JUDGMENT DAY...  whistling cop mad

Karma tends to happen before judgment day, but sometimes not.

I e-mailed Jim last week and was told all K&K PWM is gone.  No more on order.   crying

I'll more than likely install another K&K like I have in my FIII.  I installed the last 3 I bought, it's really easy.  The nice part about the Western Mini is that you can install them in many guitar but you only need one preamp.

Here we go Dan. I don't want electronics on mine! Don't plan on playing out this year! If they sound as good as John says, for those that want them will surely sound sweet.bigrin
I'm set on tuners, was just going with the flow, trying to get a large order of opens that fit. Open ones, I want, but am going for the closed vintage style with ebony buttons. Will have them installed by one of my luthiers. There, that's done.
Now, off to PUPS for others!

On my 1993 Martin OM-21 I have a L R Baggs active element with a sound hole adjustment and it works very well for me. But that is only used at weddings and an occasional time around the house. I like the plain ole acoustic sound.
Even on my Ipod I set the equalizer to acoustic.

An amusing side note regarding the Ipod. I had uploaded a Jackson Browne album "For Everyman" I think, but it only loaded the track #, just like Denis' c.d. did. So yesterday while mowing the lawn it would play J.B. and then Denis until the 7th track.
Way to go Denis +1 playing with Jackson Browne

I did snag one of the K&K Pure Western's........I do not expect to be plugged in much with this guitar but thought it a decent idea to at least have something just in case.

Denis,

A couple questions about your pickup....
What preamp are you using for your K&K?
Is endpin hole big enough to install the K&K jack without drilling?

Someone here mentioned that they have the I-beam installed on a guitar (or two or three?).  Is that also attached to the bridge plate like the K&K transducers? How's the sound? Could you run the I-beam through an Aura preamp, or are those strictly for under saddle transducers?

Trying to get a feel for my options here...

...Jim's site says he still has the two Trinity Western's, but if they also require another separate preamp, I'm not sure I want to invest that much in amplification for a guitar that won't get used 'out' much. Anyone know about this (I'll also e-mail Jim, but I know he's busy)?

Oops. Never mind.
Through magic of the SEARCH function, I found out that these questions have already been answered (K&K Pure; Yes).

Carry on.

Trinity Western has active pre-amp so it doesn't require external pre-amp

That's what I thought, too, but from looking at their website, I'm confused, which is why I asked for further clarification (I also e-mailed Jim Holler).  It looks like to get the most out of the system, you need the Trinity Preamp, which takes the price up to $388, not just the $218 listed on Jim's website.

So now I'm leaning toward the Active iBeam for $150 ... similar pickup (transducer with preamp on the bridgeplate) for a lot less money, and still very good to excellent reviews.  Anyone heard/used them both and have an opinion?

I've actually put the original tuners back on both my current acoustic Larrivees...my OM has Schallers and my D-03R has Larrivee/Pings. I do have ebony keys on both for weight reduction.

I'm not putting any new or extra holes in the Forum IV...so any replacement tuners are going to have to be direct drop-ins for me...and can be done later on down the road.

 +1

me too, I just canceled my tuner order to Jim with the same reason... no extra holes or exposed holes in my F-IV.
I can live with Ping, but not the ugly exposed holes  whistling

cheers,

Are the Grover Sta-tite open back tuners perfect drop-in or will they cause extra/exposed holes on F-IV?

I'm holding off on tuners too.
I just spoke with Scott at Domo Intl. and I told him I would place an order when I know exactly what tuners are shipped with the F IV.
As of now it looks like I'm going with the SG-360, chrome with black buttons.

2 new holes will have to be drilled for the Sta-tites however the old mounting screw holes will not be exposed.  The new tuner backing plate will cover the 1 hole used by the Mini-Pings.   You will need  bushings for the peg-head holes also.
