The ivoroid is a nitro product so it will off gas and shrink a bit over time, but I seriously doubt that shrinking plastic is the problem on newly shipped guitars. Occam would say the simplest answer is the likely answer and the likely answer is quality control on the actual fret work.  The fretwork on Larrivee guitars is, in all likelyhood, a people problem not a material problem.

Occam's razor (or Ockham's razor[1]), entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem, is the principle that "entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity" and the conclusion thereof, that the simplest explanation or strategy tends to be the best one.

Actually, the simplest explanation, in the majority of cases, is dehydration. I am always puzzled at a refusal to accept that hydration problems are, generally speaking, either the owner's or their dealer's fault.

unclrob, what about guitars that don't exhibit fret problems? I've had one I bought new for years and the frets are great. It seems that almost all of them would exhibit problems if the binding was the cause.

I only started seeing the problem after the move to Oxnard.Looking at my 2 older Canadian Larrivee's the finish does not come over the binding.I will check with several of my friends that play Larrivee's some are new and some are old.

One more thing too add to the shrinkage theory is that I noticed that the fret marker in the binding will stick out also.As far as I know ebony just doesn't shrink that much.I also need to add that the fret end are not finish properly, just snipped and a proper jod should have included a rounding of the corners. Not everyone does this.

Check your frets,do the round over job and razor blade of the protuding dot.A lite sanding will of the dots will solve the problems.

Thanks Rob. I was just looking at fret files on stewmac and in my Grizzly catalog. I have not ordered a crowning file yet but will today. I made a rounding file just like the stewmac kind for the ends though.

I'll check out allparts. I like that diamond fretfile with two in one on it at stewmac. It's also the most expensive. Grizzly has the 3 in 1 for 37.50. That's a lot less then stewmac and appears to be the exact same one.

I thought those markers were plastic too.

The 3 in one fret file is made in the USA and is 34.95. I'm pretty sure it is the same as stew macs, just 10 bucks less.

They have the largest showroom in the U.S. for tools and machinery at Muncy, Pa. the 2cnd largest is in Springfield , Mo. and another in Washington state. They carry a limited amount of guitar merchandise compared to all that they sell. But it's still a lot of items.
