A couple of weeks ago I did something radical....bought a hand made guitar.

....a Huss & Dalton OO-SP custom
14 inch lower bout, 4 inch depth - the size of a classical,
I read reports it was as loud as dreadnaughts.....yea, right, no way
The online dealer said it was louder than anything in his shop.....sure, nice sales pitch.

When it arrived and I played it for the first time I believed the reports and the dealer.

I played it exclusively for a couple of weeks.
Then on the way home from work I visited a shop to get some strings.
I played all the best guitars he had in the shop.

My first reaction was 'they all have absolutely dead strings' - can't the shop do better than that ?
The best guitar was a vintage Martin dread - it was the loudest guitar in the shop.
It sounded good but not as good as the H&D OO-sp.
They all sounded like they 'were not plugged in' compared to the H&D OO that seems amplified.

At home I picked up my Pavan tp-30 classical -
a very strong classical, lots of volume, much more than my Takamine classical.
My first thought was  'somethings wrong with it'
It was like my ears were plugged up and I could not hear it.
It took 20 minutes of playing for my ears to adjust and it started to sound somewhat acceptable.

The volume, clarity, projection, response of this hand made guitar has
raised the bar - I'm afraid factory guitars will never sound the same to me again...

so BEWARE... if you try one that's similar to this H&D OO-SP , you may never be the same.

Sounds like "volume" was one of your main considerations... although I'm sure it's a lot more than that

Maybe a good amplifier would make you even happier!   bigrin

The only Collings I've played is a OOO-2h.....very nice guitar....It was a while back.
I remember it was also loud....but I don't think it had as much volume as the H&D OO-SP.

If you research reviews of the OO-sp, you'll find that almost everyone comments on the volume.

I had 2 Larrivee dreads - an L-03R and then an SD-50.
...really liked the volume of the dreads....
but wanted to find a smaller guitar that also had good volume.

yes...volume is a surprising feature of the oo-sp but there is also the response, clarity, sustain, perfect intonation in all positions,
on a lot of guitars if you fret the bass E string at 3rd position or above you tend to get a percussive thunk with fast decay- sounds muted.
with the H&D oo-sp you get a beautiful note that sustains very well.

Ben, you've  got it    ....that's how my H&D sounds compared to the factory guitars I played in the shop ! It sounds plugged in.

One advantage of having all this volume is -
if you want to , you can play with a very light touch and still get good volume -
that helps for example if you a playing a fast piece - your fingers can 'dance' across the strings as if you were amped.
