Anyone played one of these?  Sure are "purdy"...

Unfortunately no sound clip for this guitar, most of them at Guitar Adoptions have them.
Three Larries and a Guild and an A&L...and electrics...and a mando

"Your lack of technique can be part of your style. The thing about style is that it's more entertaining, more important and hopefully more intellectual than technique."
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)

That is the only one I've ever seen - I wish I could find less expensive one. I don't need the guitar, but ziricote has major appeal on the wood porn meter -

I've watched that guitar - they've had it a looooong time. I would love to play it and see how it sounds - and to see it up close!

Ziricote is most striking in appearance, similar to Brazilian Rosewood but in shades of greys and olive greens with black rather than reds with black. Heavier than most Rosewoods, it works somewhat like Ebony, and tends to be brittle, but what is lacks in workability it more than makes up for in tonality. It is used by Goodall Guitars and Breedlove Guitars for some of their finest models and has been used by a number of discriminating classical and steel string builders such as Mark Blanchard, Michael Bashkin and Gerald Sheppard. The special grade sets feature strong black line figure. Some sets have 'spider-webbing' and a few will have sapwood centers. Call for availability.

A quick word of warning.  I know that ziricote guitars made by respected UK luthiers Ralph Bown and Rick Sellens have developed cracks.  Rick won't use that tonewood again.

Maybe that's why GA isn't giving any kind of discount (retail price $ = our price $). That's a new one.

Collings OM2Hc (EIR/Sitka)
Schenk Ophirio (Sapele/Cedar)
Bourgeois 00 Custom (Mahogany/It. Spruce)

Also, I don't know why, but they raised the price a grand on that particular guitar a while back. It is definitely for the rare Larrivee collector -

I'm sure if anyone called Dave at GA, they'd get a better price than that.

I too heard that it is prone to cracks...I thought I'd heard the term Mexican crackwood used for ziricote.

I have trouble with wood that looks "too good".  Just seems to me that pretty looking wood doesn't always translate to good sounding wood.  Quilted maple looks outstanding but I've never played a maple guitar I liked...

I talked to Dave about that one a while ago.. from memory;

He said it was hands down the best Larrivee he had ever played, and he's in no hurry to ever sell it, and thinks no one is nuts enough to meet his asking price.. then he can keep taking care of his stock by playing it to make sure it's in good shape ;-)

I heard Jean called it "Mexican crack wood" because of it's ablity to crack at the drop of a hat, and will not build with it again.... but that's a only a rumor

David Webber has built a handfull of guitars in Zircotte, and is keeping the roundbody cutaway for himself...

Rob Bastos has built a cutaway OM with sinker redwood over zircotte, calls his fingerstyle ferrarri

IF i was to commision a guitar from either Rob or David i would be putting zircotte high on my list.. but am doubtfull it will ever be on a factory run of guitars

d.

He has a really sweet Northwood that's $1500 less than the Larry and emulates the Lowden RT signature.

I played an absolutely fantastic Breedlove OM Revival deluxe this weekend with a Redwood top and Ziricote B&S. The Ziricote & Redwood combo really bring out the mid's which are so often lacking in a lot of guitars. Breedlove dubs this wood combination "Mocha" as the sound is just rich and chocolaty. This particular Redwood and Ziricote guitar is one of the best looking guitar I've ever seen......and it sounds just as good. $4G's and I could have taken her home, but alas all I can do it lust  This wood combo seems to be pretty rare, but if you enjoy the warmth of a cedar topped guitar, this combo will have you grinning from ear to ear. According to the dealer, Ziricote is now on the endangered species list and the upcharge for Ziricote on a Breedlove is almost $2K. IMHO the Breedlove Revival Series is a fantastic guitar, especially if you can find one used. The Deluxe models have standard Adi top and they are GREAT guitars. I don't own one (yet!!) but know a good guitar when I hear it......at least to my ear

I just took receipt of a used Breedlove SC-20 in Zirocote/Spruce and the voice on this thing is just amazing.  For fingerstyle, it tops
my SC's, Goodalls, and Larrivees.
