At the show I saw him at 3 years ago, he had just signed an endorsement deal with Gibson and was playing a big maple J200 for much of the evening.

The few times I've heard Tommy play, the amplification was so high he could of played a 2x4 for all it added to the tone -

Of course, Mr. Emmanuel could make a 2x4 sound great, amplified or not.

Bunch of Larrivees - all good -

The Larrivee L09 California model sounded dreadful, - totally dead - which I put down to some very old strings.

Thats a bit of a problem in Australian music shops.
Given the fact that Australia probably doesnt have the wide spread guitar playing percentage that the US has, and even fewer spend a lot of money on expensive guitars, the ones in shops tend to sit for a long time, and the shops dont change strings. They just sit there with dead strings.

Cheers, Scott.

Yep - that's one of the (few?) advantages of coated strings - JCL, Taylor and a couple others certainly grabbed the opportunity to "present" their guitars fresher on the shelf for longer. Gibson (South Africa) certainly doesn't care a hoot how crap their guits sound in the shops. (I believe they no longer do business here mind you - wonder why...?)
